Set outside the French Quarter so you can actually take the car and park, this club consists of a bar plus a small stage at the back and room for about 25 tables where you can eat and drink. The food is moderately priced and fair quality. But its the music you come for and the atmosphere. A high percentage local audience provides bags of atmosphere. The music varies night to night but has some really good local singers as well as more established acts. Well worth a visit.

If New Orleans’ music scene could be traced to a single street, it would definitely be Frenchmen. The three-block section in the city’s now-hipstery Marigny district is packed with some of NOLA’s most well known and frequented bars and clubs, including The Spotted Cat and The Maison. A relative newcomer to the scene, The Three Muses opened in 2010 and quickly distinguished itself not only for holding its own when its comes to heavy hitting musical acts—hosting lively performances of hot jazz, country and western and piano—but also for its superb food and drink offerings. Dive into a plate of bistro-inflected fare, such as beer-braised pork belly, grab a house cocktail such as the Spaghetti Western (bourbon, Campari, rosemary syrup), and soak in the good vibes.

Long and narrow, with a handsome tin ceiling that glows gold under soft-lit sconces, Maple Leaf Bar hosts some of the city’s best acts nightly. Tuesday nights with the Rebirth Brass Band are a floor-stomping citywide institution, while Sunday evenings feature the more laid back Joe Krown Trio. The bar offers a free crawfish boil that’s been known to include odds ‘n’ ends such as sausage, pork chops and even a whole pig’s head. Located in New Orleans’ stately Uptown district, Maple Leaf is a nice departure from the French Quarter scene.

Formerly an underground, artist-dominated coffee shop, the Freret building that houses Gasa Gasa was taken over in 2013 by an experimental art collective that upholds the space’s visual and sonic past. A nice departure for New Orleans music lovers looking to see something other than the city’s amazing jazz, Gasa Gasa’s diverse calendar includes small indie rock bands, Thursday night cornhole in the courtyard, and the occasional 90s dance party. Art installations, such as wall-mounted 3-D triangles form a canvas for the club’s sophisticated projection mapping setup, and event prices are millennial-friendly, typically topping out at around $10.

10 minute walk from apartment. The best meal yet. In the middle of a cool little neighborhood. Place is known by locals and they even call Willie Mae’s (NOT Willies Chicken Shack!) the best Fried Chicken in town. Omg. Might have a wait outside to be seated but I am telling you, it is more than worth the wait. Candied Yams, Mac & Cheese, Corned Bread Muffin....amazing. A must stop. And the added bonus is that it gets you off the tourist streets and into a real neighborhood of New Orleans and having a meal with locals.

Innovative upscale foodie court in repurposed train station. Excellent Small Food Hall St. Roch Market is a charming food hall which is located outside the touristy area of the French Quarter. Consequently you'll see plenty of locals grabbing a quick meal, coffee, or a drink. There are about a dozen places here: you can have Haitian griot or Southern Grits...or perhaps Pho, coffee, or chocolate A nice change from the hubbub of the Quarter. As elsewhere in New Orleans, everyone here was friendly, especially the Filipino woman who took the trays and was gracious enough to offer to fill up our water. She was warm and friendly and took time to chat. A real asset to St. Roch Market although sad

Commander's Palace, nestled in the middle of the tree-lined Garden District, has been a New Orleans landmark since 1893. Known for the award-winning quality of its food and its convivial atmosphere, the history of this famous restaurant offers a glimpse into New Orleans' storied past and has been the go-to destination for Haute Creole cuisine and whimsical Louisiana charm. The winner of seven James Beard Foundation Awards, Commander's Palace has evolved into a culinary legend. When Ella, Dottie, Dick and John Brennan took over personal supervision of the restaurant in 1974, they began to give the splendid old landmark a new look both inside and out including painting the outside the iconic "Commander's Blue." Now under the watchful eye of co-proprietors Ti Adelaide Martin and Lally Brennan, the Brennan family's dedication to perfection has never wavered. A steady parade of renowned chefs - Emeril Lagasse, Paul Prudhomme, Jamie Shannon, and now Tory McPhail - have made Commander's Palace the world-class restaurant what it is today and its leading-edge Haute Creole cuisine reflects the best of the city.

Constructed in Moss Point, Mississippi, the Paddlewheeler Creole Queen took her maiden voyage on October 1, 1983. She is an authentic paddlewheeler powered by a 24-foot diameter paddlewheel and the most modern, fuel efficient GE diesel-electric system ever installed in a boat of this class. Even though the Creole Queen would have been right at home among the steamboats of 1850's New Orleans, passengers of that era could never have conceived of a paddlewheeler with her luxury, comfort and safety. Ninety tons of air conditioning and heating keep the interior spaces pleasant all year round. Luxurious private rooms, stereo music and sound systems, modern restrooms and handicapped accessible facilities all combine to make the Paddlewheeler Creole Queen a true floating palace.
