La Esperanza is only a couple of minutes' walking distance from the apartment. It is a busy Mexican-style supermarket with a no frills restaurant / diner in the back. Often when we want a snack or appetizer, we walk over and take home a portion of their delicious freshly made guacamole and chips (you order it at the back from a server). The supermarket has eggs, beer, freshly-made salsa, limes, avocados... The restaurant's food is very good, very hearty (I love the shrimp fajitas) and the staff are welcoming and friendly. If you know a little Spanish, that may help the ordering process (depending on who's working that day). However, as long as you are patient and relaxed, you will have a good and inexpensive meal. The menu has few vegetarian items, but in the past the staff have offered to make whatever a customer asks for -- they are happy to serve you the meal you want.

The Saturday morning Farmers' market is one of the best parts of Knoxville. Arrive early to take advantage of the free parking garages nearby: sample the food trucks, the hand pies, and the surrounding restaurants. I recommend looking for Rushy Springs farm's stall: he makes a wide range of chili powders and chili sauces, some of which are unique to his farm.

Sit in a hammock and sip your coffee. Be aware -- the ice coffee is strong here. Strong!

This is a fun local Mexican restaurant close to the house, and a good spot if you are meeting up with friends. The tacos are tasty; the "top shelf" drinks are very strong.

A casual, open space with unusual, imaginative beers and free ginger ale for pregnant / nursing women. Every night a food truck visits. A great embodiment of Knoxville's "scruffy" charm.
