Its rich history is directly connected to the Modern Olympic Games as from their revival in 1896 until the Athens Olympic Games in 2004. It is estimated that the church was built sometime in the 11th century over an ancient Greek pagan temple dedicated to the worship of a goddess, possibly Athena or Demetra.
