Open air restaurant and bar right on the beach, literally! Open for lunch and dinner, brunch on Sunday. Come for happy hour (3 to 5 pm daily) and stay for a gorgeous sunset! Live music daily, and sometimes a hula girl to entertain you.

There are two restaurants next to one another right on Kailua Bay. Huggo's is more upscale and Huggo's on the Rocks is more the drinks & entertainment crowd. There are tables and chairs in the sand. Live music daily and sometimes hula dancers, too. Try their Mac Nut pie for dessert!

Tiny little wine bar in the front of the Island Gourmet Grocery, directly across the street from the condo. They have happy hour 3-6pm and 10-11:30pm daily. They have really good prices for excellent wines and drinks. The best part is their vast menu. I love the La Crema chardonnay for $6.95 a glass! Pair it with the Volcano sushi roll or Kalbi beef ribs. So ono!!

My favorite are the ciders, especially the White pineapple and seasonal Tangelo. This place has transformed from a tiny little brewery with beers and ciders to a "must stop" when visiting Kona. They have added hard seltzers and hard teas to their line up.

Essentials

Just across the street from the condo in the Queen's Marketplace is the Island Gourmet Market. They have EVERYTHING you will need! Besides a grocery store, they have a great meat counter with items ready to throw on the grill. They also make a variety of fresh poke daily. My favorite is the beef pipikaula, SO ONO!! They also have a deli/take out where they make breakfast, lunch and dinner. They have panini sandwiches, sushi, Asian specialties and wonderful salads. The groceries are a little cheaper at Foodland, in the Mauna Lani Center a little drive North on the freeway. They also have a wide variety of souvenirs! My husband loves to walk over in the morning for fresh Malasadas (Hawaiian doughnuts) and some hot Kona coffee.

Before you head North to the condo, you might want to stop and get your staples here. They have many items that you don't see at your local store! You can buy a suckling pig in a box in the refrigerated section, awesome seafood section and local Island beef. It's a short drive south towards Kona. This is the best price for items like, produce, liquor and gas!

Use my phone number for a local discount! This is a true local grocery store, cheaper than the Island Gourmet Market across the street. They have a really good deli, fresh fish and local favorites. They just updated and expanded their wine and spirits section. Local produce is a good price here.

Parks & Nature

This beach is usually included in the top 10 beaches of the world. It is a big, golden sand beach with plenty of room to spread out. Parking is now $5 but you can park on the road and make a short walk in. Bring the cooler, boogie boards and umbrella and enjoy the day. On the hill, there are shaded picnic tables and restrooms above the beach. On occasion there are big pounding waves, so be careful.

Beautiful, warm, turquoise waters and some snorkeling off the rocks. This beach can get crowded. Be sure to bring the umbrella and chairs as there is no natural shade here. There are bathrooms and free parking. The turn is just across from the Cemetery on Highway 19, near mile marker 88. This beach is not easy access for the elderly or disabled. You have to walk down some rocks and sand to get down to the beach.

At Akaka Falls State Park, located along the northeastern Hamakua Coast, you can see two gorgeous waterfalls on one short hike. The pleasant 0.4-mile uphill hike will take you through a lush rainforest filled with wild orchids, bamboo groves and draping ferns. As you follow the paved footpath, you'll first see 100-foot Kahuna Falls. Continue to follow the loop around the bend, and you'll discover towering Akaka Falls which plummets 442-feet into a stream-eroded gorge. Beautiful Akaka Falls is perhaps Hawaii Island's most famous waterfall. Easily accessible, this hike takes less than an hour.

Be prepared for an adventure! It is amazing! It is a mountain summit of 9200 feet above sea level with the world's largest astronomical observatory & 13 working telescopes. Bring warm clothing and be careful if you are prone to elevation sickness. Seriously, the drive up is kind of eerie and it looks like you are on Mars! Best time to go it to watch the sunrise or sunset.

More basic shops than the King's Shops. There are surf shops, Island lifestyle stores, restaurants, a grocery and a food court. I like Ippy's mahi mahi burger at the food court, so fresh! Your basic Starbucks fix is here too.

Arts & Culture

Also called the "City of Refuge." This ancient place of refuge is a beautifully preserved cultural site. There is a $5 parking fee. There are temple platforms, royal fishponds and some coastal village sites. The Hale o Keawe temple and several thatched structures have been reconstructed. This is also the best location for pictures of Ki'i or Hawaiian protector statues.

Gorgeous overlook of Waipio Valley. This fertile valley is about one mile across and over five-miles deep, and surrounded by cliffs up to 2000-feet high overlooking a black sand beach below. Hawaii Island's tallest waterfall, Hiilawe Falls cascades down 1,300 feet in the back of Waipio. The road into the valley is extremely steep and requires a 4-wheel drive vehicle so driving isn't recommended but you can take a van tour, hike or horseback tour.
