Things to do

The Fishermans Hut Just sit on the veranda and stare! On a warm day the dragonfies are amazing. Watch their acrobatic flying skills, or close up as they bask in the sun. See the trout jump to try and snatch them from mid air. There were 13 species at last count. Lay in the meadow picking wildflowers buy the handful, there's colour everywhere until the hay is cut. Keep an eye out for the Water Vole, cute furry herbivore who lives under the hut, he can sometimes be heard grazing on his salad lunch. Bright blue Kingfishers often perch over the water. Look for the little grebes who pop up unexpectedly from below the water to pick a fight with their neighbours, with much splashing, chasing and beeping calls all round. A succession of waterfowl chicks and fledglings will entertain you as the summer passes. Geese may fly in at dusk, and heron and egret will be hunting sticklebacks and toads. Twilight brings bats, barn owls hunting in the long grass, deer, and the loud calls of nocturnal animals. Tomorrow for those up early a calm misty East Anglian sunrise surrounded by wildlife and set to a dawn chorus awaits your morning coffee on the veranda.

South Elmham Minister A ruined 10th century minister set beside old water meadows is only 1 mile west of the hut. To reach it you can walk along footpaths from the lakes. Atmospheric and ancient you will pass through pastures with long grass or mud, and maybe livestock. Look out for badgers and the ancient trees. The minster is set in woodland and cannot be seen until reached. Use the footpath map provided.

All Saints Church A very small charming disused church set in a lovely churchyard. In spring the churchyard is full of orchids and other wild flowers. About a 2 mile walk from the farm, walk up the lane and take the footpath from Capps lane, or cycle there. Most of the other local village churches are also worth visiting. They have Saxon origins over a thousand years ago, and contain Norman architecture onwards.

Framlingham Beautiful small town with an imposing castle (English heritage) is a 15 mile drive from the farm. There is an entrance fee to go into the castle but you are free to work around the banks of the former moat and it is a lovely spot for a picnic. Framlingham church is also worth a look.

Beccles and Loddon From these pretty market towns it is possible to hire a motor boat for a day out, on the rivers of the Broads National Park. A day boat from Beccles upstream for lunch at the Gelderston locks pub is pleasant in fine weather.

Southwold Beautiful town on the coast famous for it's preserved seaside appeal and expensive beach huts. It has fantastic shops, Restaurants, Adnams brewery and shop worth a visit, pier, beach and working lighthouse. During the summer holidays, there's is a good maize maze on the road into Southwold. If you like seafood, there is a fab restaurant on the harbour, The Suffolk Smokehouse which we really like but you will need to book. It is close to the rowing boat ferry from Walberswick. Southwold is so popular it can be difficult to park, best avoided at the weekends and on Bank holidays, unless you get there early.

Walberswick Former fishing village now a very popular destination for visitors. It has two attractive old pubs, The Bell and The Anchor, both serving good food. They do get very busy in the summer but have efficient service. The beach has sand dunes but the main attraction for families is the chance to go crab fishing on the estuary. You can buy a bucket and line in the village but take some bait with you, bacon works best! Great walking along the marshes to Dunwich.

Dunwich Coast and Heath This AONB is owned by the National Trust, in late summer it is very colourful as the heather is in bloom. In the autumn, it is possible to see the deer rutting. There is plenty of walking and good cycle routes to explore in every direction and access to the sea. Dunwich village is a quiet historic remnant of a mediaeval city lost to the sea.

Covehithe The village fell over the cliff long ago. Spectacular ruined church and great walking along the beach and clifftop in both directions. Popular considering its remoteness, but so much space it will never be crowded. Make sure you get as far as Benacre Broad if walking to see birds and shipwreck.

Blythburgh. For when everywhere else is busy. Lunch at the White Hart Inn with the beer garden overlooking the estuary (book table). Visit the finest church in Suffolk- no really you must. Then walk/cycle the abandoned railway track to Walbeswick with stunning views of estuary. Ospreys, marsh harriers and our favourite secret hidden footpath along the way if you can find it, just don’t tell anyone!

Fen Farm Dairy Local diary farm, producing raw milk for sale and cheese from their brown and white Montbelliard cows which graze the Waveney valley marshes. They have a very small but very popular farm produce shed, selling their cheese, butter, milk and local artisan bread. I would also recommend the coffee, from their coffee machine using their own milk.
