This is a historical spot, so much history. This is the heart of the Big Island, You gotta go here! once you are there you will be able to read all the history markers. Its spectacular views. If you want to hike down. Be in great shape. You have to use a 4 wheel drive down and back up again. You can hitch hike if your brave enough. If you hike it, you are probably an ironman or at least in really good shape. Plan to stay at the bottom for the day. There are waterfalls to hike to once you reach the bottom. The ocean here is incredible.

Mauna Kea is the highest mountain geographically in the world from sea level to the tip top. from ground to the top is 14.000 feet. You need a 4 wheel drive to go to the top and you will stop halfway point for 30 minutes because of the oxygen levels. Its an amazing feat. We've done it half a dozen times and never get tired of this incredible bucket list moment!! DRESS WARM it get to around 32 degrees and often there is snow.

Hilo is on the other side of the Island (the wet and rainy side). Its an island unto itself. Its where most all of the spectacular waterfalls are !! Go for the entire day. its about 90 min there and worth it!! there are tropical rain forests to see, camping, hiking. Rainbow falls is there and so many other things in Hilo. We often don't go because Im from Portland Oregon so Ive had enough rain for a lifetime but many people prefer it over Kona. Kailua is the warm sunshine place on the Island. Hilo is the green wet and Very beautiful spot of the island!!
