Chef-owner Michael Fuller founded this exceptional, upscale little eatery in an authentic 1927 diner over 30 years ago. Ever since, he's been offering a verbal menu of four seasonally changing items, sourced largely from local farms. Locals rave that the food here is Brattleboro's best. The diner seats just 18 souls, so reserve ahead. No credit cards.

Hearthside dining at candlelit tables enhances the experience at this gracious roadside 1790s inn. The menu is wide-ranging: 'Yankee favorites' like traditional pot roast cooked in the tavern's own ale; New England scrod baked with Vermont cheddar, bread crumbs, sherry and lemon; and local venison (a regular Friday special) seal the deal.

A must see and do in the summer if you love river swimming. Many great swimming holes along a couple mile stretch of the Rock River where it meets the West River. Cool, clear water, diverse swimming holes, clothing optional areas (you'll need to ask around where to find the trail). This is a local treasure that many drive to from all over New York and New England.

Great place to swing by, check out the Inn from 1801 originally. The front desk is a good place to ask for local things happening as well as good advice for just about anything you're looking for. The adjoining Phelps Pub in an old bar setting is also an excellent place for a cozy dinner or drinks and often live music. Thursday nights are burger night, which is a delicious burger, fries/salad and a drink for about $15. They have a great menu regularly and some tasty cocktails. (sadly it's often closed on the weekend for events, aka mostly weddings). The Inn has a nicer restaurant for dinners onsite as well.

Very interesting former 19th century industrial town that fell on hard times and is now working hard to reinvent itself as an affordable place for artists. There are a couple galleries, cafes and some very interesting architecture, esp industrial architecture. There's a hidden riverfront trail walk that can be found if you go down the ramp by the flatiron cafe and across the RR tracks (check out the cool stone tunnel under town!) on down towards the river. Great views of the CT River, falls, and damn.

Outside Manchester, the 24-room Georgian Revival mansion of Robert Todd Lincoln, son of Abraham and Mary Lincoln, is a national treasure. Lincoln family members lived here until 1975, when it was converted into a museum and filled with many of the family's personal effects and furnishings. These include the hat Abraham Lincoln probably wore when he delivered the Gettysburg Address, and remarkable brass casts of his hands, the right one swollen from shaking hands while campaigning for the presidency. The museum ticket includes access to the surrounding grounds, which are home to 8 miles of walking, skiing and snowshoeing trails, an observatory with a telescope, etc.

Nestled in the Connecticut Valley of south western New Hampshire, Walpole is one of New England's prettiest villages. Many of its beautiful and historic buildings have been restored by its residents, so today's town looks much as it did years ago. Walpole's uniqueness comes from being a real town - not a museum like re- creation - with its citizens being its most valuable resource. It is a vibrant community, still holding the traditional Town Meeting with participation from a wonderfully diverse population of 3700 people. A close drive just across the border - as quaint as it gets to stroll around!

Drinks & Nightlife

Fun bar closest to the cabin in Chester or 7 mile drive. Be extremely careful and don't drink and drive. The road is twisty and passes up through a mtn pass so it's very icy in the winter. The pub is fun, the owner truly Scottish, and it's cheap.
