Food scene

Just down the road and to the right is the best breakfast and lunch place in the area. There may be a small wait but the wait if worth it. Features farm to table using local farms and orchards. The catfish sandwich is to die for. Chef is CIA trained. The specials change daily and offer great variety and culinary skill.

A few miles away just off 44/55 is the Gunk Haus a beautifully placed restaurant with incredible views and a European style menu with a german/hungarian splash. You can also dine out on the porch and enjoy the surrounding orchards. There is a wonderful selection of desserts and breads made in their own onsite bakery.

This locally owned attic store is filled with many categories of true finds. I shop there often and several of the pieces in my barn originate there. The owner, Jeff, is friendly and helpful and always on site. Just ask and he will look for whatever it is you seek. on the way to Gunk Haus.

Craft drinks seem to be the rage these days. And Angry Orchard is one of the best hard ciders made. Just about five miles from my barn, it has guided tours and tastings.

You must stop at least once at Tantillo's on Rt. 208 north. It serves homemade icecream. A favorite activity is to get a cone and sit in one of their adirondack chairs and watch the sun go down over the mountains. They also sell local produce and homemade pies and the best apple cider donuts in New York State! Try some and take some home! In the fall there is apple and pumpkin picking.

Sightseeing

The 60's are not quite over when you enter New Paltz. Nice to walk the rail trail along the wallkill river, check out the many shops (tie dye is still and option) and restaurants. Too many to mention. Also has the original stone houses on Huegenot street. Built in the 1600's. Not to be missed. Just outside town is a complex of swimming pools for all ages. On memorial day weekend and labor day weekend the huge craft fair is held there. Amazing crafters from all over the US are there, as are the food vendors. In August the Ulster County fair is there. One price admission and the rides are all free. Of course there are food vendors, pig racing, live entertainment and 4-H competition, horse show. A true county fair. Not to be missed.

City/town information

River Grill, Vesuvio's, Billy Joe's BBQ, Tiny Taco's, all restaurants on the waterfront in Newburgh, just 13 miles from my barn. Wallk along the sidewalk along the riverside and if one restaurant doesn't appeal, go to the next. Dine al fresco on the bank of the Hudson and enjoy the cool river breezes. For the less adventurous, make reservations.

Most folks are pretty friendly.

Most places listed here are pretty close and easy to find either by gps or well marked signage or by just asking. The weather is somewhat changeable for packing for rain or sudden change of temperature if a good idea. Just sitting on the porch and watching the birds or the clouds is a great way to relax if that's what you are here for.
