Home to just a couple of hundred people, and accessed by only two roads, the Bealach pass road from the south and the coast road from the North, this is a haven from the noise and clutter of modern life. Applecross is the name for the whole peninsula and the community is made up of the various crofting townships from North to south namely; Ardheslaig, Kenmore, Fearnabeag, Fearnamor, Cuaig, Lonbain, Applecross Bay & Shore St, Milltown, Camusteil, Camusterrach, Culduie, Ard Dubh & Toscaig.

The village itself is a string of largely whitewashed cottages and other buildings laid out along the shore of the loch with others scattered up the rising ground behind it. Shieldaig comes complete with a small collection of tourist services, including a shop and a hotel, the excellent Tigh an Eilean which offers comfortable and outstanding dining. Next door to the hotel and under the same ownership is the Shieldaig Bar, whose Coastal Kitchen offers bistro-style dining upstairs or on a roof terrace. Towards the southern end of the village is Nanny's Cafe.

Plockton settlement is on the shores of Loch Carron. It faces east away from the prevailing winds, and together with the North Atlantic Drift gives it a mild climate despite the far-north latitude, allowing the Cordyline australis palm to prosper. From Plockton you can enjoy going on calum seal trips (free if no seals).

Sightseeing

Bealach na Bà is a winding single track road through the mountains of the Applecross peninsula, in Wester Ross in the Scottish Highlands. The Bealach na Bà is just one feature on this road, being its highest point and site of several corries. The historic mountain pass was built in 1822 and is engineered similarly to roads through the great mountain passes in the Alps, with very tight hairpin bends that switch back and forth up the hillside and gradients that approach 20%. It has the steepest ascent of any road climb in the UK, rising from sea level at Applecross to 626 metres (2,054 ft), and is the third highest road in Scotland. Once you get to Applecross, the Applecross Inn is highly recommended for food and drink.
