Food Scene

The New Orleans standard if you get a good waiter. Of course you can pick your waiter. Request John or Imre -- and a table in the main dining room. Do not eat upstairs. Off-menu treat: fried chicken

I cannot say enough about this restaurant, which is destined to be one of the greats. Eat at the bar if you cant get a table and order turtle soup, which comes with three tiny deviled quail eggs

Old-school bistro, tucked into Exchange Alley and favored by the Uptown set. Game dishes abound. Angle for one of the outdoor tables and do try the gumbo

So nice here. Take a table in the bar and find Chris, the chef-owner. Pay respects to Dr. Brobson Lutz, noted bon vivant and former city health director. He's a regular. Weird specialty: Cheeseburger

Kappa Horn, one of my best friends, runs this plucky neighborhood joint. People have been known to kill for a plate of her crawfish etouffee (just kidding, Kappa!). Everything on the menu is good.

Where it all began. Go for the $20, three-course, prix fixe lunch. Is the food that good or do the 25-cent lunch martinis just make it seem that way?

Man, is this place old! One of the only surviving stand-up bars in town. Underwent a kitchen revamp recently but slow-cooked brisket still rules

They say Pirate Lafitte and Andrew Jackson drank here. Favored by out-of-town oil men. Can be wild during Christmas season, as every law firm holiday party seems to terminate at the Absinthe.

Some say Central Grocery has the best muffalettas. Poppycock. Rumored Mob ties (Frank's was bugged during Fed-run "Operation Hard Crust" investigation) seal this restaurant's street cred

I once saw Mick and Keith play impromptu at this place. Kermit Ruffins may have his own place now but Vaughn's still rocks on Thursdays. You'll need to take a cab to this one
