Sightseeing
The Meije is located right in the “green hart” of Holland, lots of nature between the large cities of Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Utrecht and The Hague. It is well known for its curly country road, its small river, its water tower: Pietje Potlood – Pencil Pete as it looks like a huge pencil.

Meije

The "Nieuwkoopse Plassen" is home of many birds and has protected areas to preserve nature. By foot or by bike you can go from the Meije to Nieuwkoop by using a small trail called Het Oortjespad. The small bridge in the middle is called Het Kwakelbruggetje. From the Meije you get onto this trail at the Pietje Potlood - our water tower.

Local grocery store with a liquor store next to it. If you download the AH App, you can also order online a couple of days in advance and have the groceries delivered to the Houseboat right after you've arrived.

City/town information
The nearest village with sufficient grocery stores, shops and restaurants. Bodegraven is know as a cheese - village. At the end of September there normally is a annual fair with a Cheese Queen, cheese market, fairground in the middle of the village and a carnaval. (not sure during Covid times though). Bodegraven also has a railway station from where you can easily travel to larger cities.

Amsterdam.....the capital of the Netherlands.....one of the top city trip destinations in the world.......visiting it for a day is great too.....take the train and from the Central station, you'll find your way around ......f.e. by hop-on-hop-off canal boat or bus and visit all the famous buildings and locations of Amsterdam.

An old Holland America Line cruiseship is currently being used as a hotel.......take a boat tour through the port......visit the maritime museum.......enjoy good food.....do some shopping......all in all there's a lot to do in Rotterdam!

Rent a canoe, electrical boat, SUP boards, sailing boats and even traditional rowing boats for fishing.......It also has a nice restaurant to enjoy after a fun time on the water!

Public transportation - Buurtbus De Meije and train
Check ns.nl or 9292.nl You can use public transportation although it’s a little limited. The “Buurtbus” stops right in front of the houseboat, the bus stop is called “De Hollandsche Boerderij” across the street at the bus stop. Please see the schedule. The bus goes to Bodegraven (final destination railway station) or to Woerden (final destination railway station). The nice thing about the buurtbus, is that it will stop and let you off, wherever you want to along the route. From these railway stations, you can take the train to wherever you want to go. (only limited days/times though).
