Beautiful former priory dating back to the early 12th century. Lord Byron lived here in the late 18th century. Curiously, the abbey was never an abbey, it was a priory.

Mam Tor
Lovely views out to the river. Newark Castle was founded some 800 years ago, originally in timber, then remade in stone. Dismantled in the 17th century then restored in the 19th century. A walk on both sides of the river is recommended.

Spectacular views of Hope Valley and Cave Dale from the top. Very steep climb. The castle was founded sometime around 1066-1086. Mam Tor is but two kilometres away.
