City/town information

An eclectic mix of old and new, Pahoa is a colorful historic town in the Puna district of Hawai'i Island (the Big Island). From the funky boardwalk section of old town Pahoa to the new Puna Kai shopping center, you will find an interesting mix of restaurants and shops, and some local color in the inhabitants, fondly known as "Punatics".

Hilo's historic Bayfront Drive business district offers a beautiful view view of Hilo Bay, quaint historic buildings, and a variety of shops, restaurants and galleries. There are several good museums, including the Tsunami Museum and Imiloa Astronomy center.

Beaches

Beautiful, wild Kehena black sand beach is a favorite with locals. Be aware, this is an unregulated, clothing optional beach, so you will see nudity. There are no lifeguards, and the waves and currents can at times be strong, so know your own limits and use the beach safely. If you are lucky, you will see Hawaiian spinner dolphins and be able to swim with these playful creatures.

Parks

Hawaii Volcanoes Park is a must see for wonderful hiking and an overview of Kilauea Volcano and the formation of Hawaii Island. My favorite hikes are Kilauea Iki, Halema'uma'u trail and Mauna Ulu trail. Easy hikes are Devastation Trail, Crater Rim Trail, Thurston Lava Tube, and Steam Banks. As of this writing, the visitor center is still closed for COVID, but hopefully will reopen sometime this summer.

An other park almost taken by the lava, McKenzie park is on the famed Red Road, with beautiful views of crashing waves and cliffs, huge ironwood trees, and a walk to the edge of the 2018 lava flow.. A favorite walk is from McKenzie Park south along the coast to the lagoon and tide flats of Malama Ki. There is a rough trail to follow, and then take the dirt road at Malama Ki back to the Red Road for a mile walk back to the park.
