If you go to Downtown Melbourne, check out Hell N Blaizes Brewery, Off the Traxx, Meg O Malleys, Matt's Casbah, and Main Street Pub. There are many more restaurants, bars and shops. Everything is easy to find and the area is very walkable. Recommend Uber if going in the evening as parking can be challenging.
