Villas of the Lake

Villa Carlotta is a daydream. The villa takes its name from Princess Charlotte, wife of George II, Duke of Sachsen-Meiningen. The villa is famous both for the art collections kept inside, (such as the kiss of Romeo and Juliet, by Hayez), and for the vast botanical garden that surrounds it, part of the Grandi Giardini Italiani circuit. Here we can find 500 different types of plants, with 150 varieties of azaleas, rhododendrons and tropical plants. Not only that, but the gardens also contain the valley of southern ferns, palm trees, cedars, the garden of bamboo and centuries-old conifers. It is also possible to visit the "Church of Villa Carlotta", namely the Sommariva Oratory, formerly dedicated to St. Francis Xavier, then to Our Lady of Sorrows.

A place that strikes you thanks to the beauty of the scenery, the spectacle of the gardens that surround the villa (whose maintenance is nothing short of impeccable) and the stories that tell the internal rooms, protagonists of the life of intellectuals and exponents of the Italian Risorgimento who chose it as a dwelling. Secret passages, sitting rooms with armchairs and sofas, rooms where Guido Monzino has collected priceless antiques, an attic with all the awards obtained, a small apartment for his mother right on the lake. In addition, many scenes of Star Wars Episode II were shot in this wonderful location! In particular, the loggia, where Anakin pensively observes the horizon, now close to the turning point of the Dark Side.

Villa Monastero is one of the buildings that most give prestige to the Italian artistic-historical-architectural heritage. It is composed of the central nucleus, represented by the House Museum with its exhibition itinerary that develops in 14 rooms, and the botanical garden which extends for almost 2 kilometers along the lake front. The 14 rooms are all furnished with impressive furniture in different styles, gigantic mirrors, refined tapestries (the graffiti of the Green Room is not to be missed!), Very special candelabra. Decorations in marble, stucco, majolica, precious glass and porcelain alternate. While the gardens, which are also a must see, both in winter and in summer thanks to the magnificent lakeside location.

Villa Olmo in Como is an example of a neoclassical villa, in addition to the beautiful architecture it is the pleasure in the sight of the wonderful panorama to bewitch. Famous for its gardens, inserted in the area of the compendium, so much so that it takes its name from a centenary elm that stood out in the garden. The interior of Villa Olmo consists of two floors, the ground floor and the first floor. The numerous events and exhibitions that are usually held in the villa are mainly set up on the ground floor. The best part, however, is reserved on the first floor, where there is the famous Sala del Duca. In the past, it was the bedroom of Duke Visconti di Mondrone. Recently restored, it represents one of the most interesting places in the villa.

The seventeenth-century Villa del Grumello overlooks the first basin of Lake Como, a few steps from the city center and is set in a centuries-old park of great naturalistic value and unique landscape. A short distance from the city center of Como and reachable on foot in a few minutes. The refinement of its rooms and the enchanting view make it historically one of the privileged residences on the banks of the Lario of well-known families - the Odescalchi, then the Giovio and from the second half of the 19th century the Celesia - who hosted illustrious personalities including Vincenzo Monti, Alessandro Volta and Ugo Foscolo. The historic garden that frames them, spread over 4 hectares, the heart of the Kilometer of Knowledge, urban park and functional cultural infrastructure, which unites Grumello with Villa Olmo and Villa Sucota. The Grumello Romantic Park is embellished with blooms in every season - including a rich collection of rare hydrangeas - and dotted with valuable secular trees such as camphor, olee fragrans, sequoias and a specimen of Ginkgo biloba, next to which it has recently been born the garden dedicated to Pliny the Elder.

The villa is currently inhabited and therefore can only be visited in some of its parts. Near this enchanting building it is possible to visit a small museum that houses numerous archaeological finds, paintings and ancient pottery. There is also the opportunity to visit the enchanting outdoor area, which is green and luxuriant. The immense green area hosts artifacts of great artistic and historical value, such as the Egyptian statues that adorn the garden or the ancient urns of Etruscan origin. The outdoor garden even hosts a Venetian gondola, which arrived here in Bellagio by the will of Napoleon, and an enchanting neoclassical chapel. The whole park is dotted with statues, busts and works from different eras, which blend with gardens and plants in an atmosphere of pure enchantment.

Informazioni sulla città/località

Menaggio is an ancient village which, once upon a time, was a shining merchant center, a reference point for the surrounding towns, thanks to its very important position. Over the centuries, this town has transformed from a commercial center into an important tourist center. The first obligatory stop to enjoy its beauties is undoubtedly the lakefront, which starts from the marina and runs alongside parks, gardens of villas and old hotels. Another attraction is the ancient village, a nucleus from which the town has developed over the centuries. And, as often happens, it is located in the upper part of the country. The way to reach it is called Via Castellino and the hamlet is known as Castello. On whose ruins the Church of San Carlo was then built, with a beautiful bell gable, actually visible from the town center. The Porto Antico is also very interesting, an unparalleled panoramic point, which for centuries has protected boats from the 'whims' of Lake Como. Also worth visiting is the hamlet of Loveno and its beautiful Altoborghesi villas, including the famous Villa Mylius Vigoni, an aristocratic villa which now houses conferences, seminars and artistic events. Furthermore, in Loveno there is also a beautiful park created in 1840 by Giuseppe Ralzaretto, with its numerous neoclassical statues.
