Food scene

Walking distance from the apartment. One of our favorite restaurants in town. Locally grown veggies with a great selection of wine. Polenta Monday is my favorite. Polenta with a twist every Monday.

Best breakfast in town and great service. It's a nice stumble over from the apartment and a fantastic stumble back after a few Bloody Mary's. They also serve lunch and dinner, which are also quite scrumptious.

Fantastic happy hour from 5-6:30pm. Great cocktails, appetizers, and the fried chicken is the best you'll find in Humboldt.

Friendly service and simple, small menu. Clam pizza is a favorite of ours! Decent beer, wine, and cider selection.

Hearty breakfast. We enjoy this spot quite a bit but I wouldn't say it's one of our favorites.

The only place to get pho and it's passable with no other pho up here. Most locals will say it's scrumptious but I grew-up on Vietnamese food and will tell you otherwise. There is another pho place in Arcata, but it's about the same quality.

Sightseeing

Quick little loop (1.1 mile) through Jurassic Park and Fern Gully. Your feet might get a bit wet but it's an easy brisk walk. Quite beautiful and is a must see. Then you can venture over to Gold Bluffs Beach afterwards or before.

Avenue of the Giants is a must see. Largest surviving stands of old growth is in our old neighborhood. We used to live in Myers Flat and I must say, the best stretch of the Avenue of Giants is between Miranda and Myers Flat.

Great little cluster of lagoons. You can do a beach hike along the lagoon with the Pacific on the other side of you or rent some kayaks in the parking lot and kayak around the lagoon. Calm and relaxing and perfect for families.

One of my favorite beaches in Humboldt County. Nice little hidden treasure with few visitors. I can't say the same during summer time though. Great views if you can get to the top of the rock.

Easy forest to get to in Arcata. Beautiful, short hikes, and there is a large playground for children. Great spot to do a quick walk if you are crunched for time.

Quick 7 minute drive from the apartment. Great short hikes through Redwoods if crunched for time or if you just want to get out for a short while without a long drive. There is a playground for children.

The trail starts as a paved, wheelchair-accessible road that undulates gently up-and-down through mixed woodland. Although the woods have clearly been logged, there aren’t a lot of stumps to be seen. Passing the Falk townsite, the road narrows and its surface turns to well-packed gravel. At 3 miles the road makes a right turn, crosses a bridge, and begins to climb. The route then turns right, off the old roadbed and onto the new singletrack trail. For the first time, the trail is now in the redwood forest and under the canopy. Reaching a ridge, the trail levels out and then descends slightly. The trail passes through a grove of white-barked red alders where a dense groundcover of ferns, this area can get a little muddy. At the loop trail intersection, turn left (the sign says to go right, but I like the way the scenery gets gradually better if you go left). The first old-growth trees appear a few yards down the trail and get more impressive as the trail switchbacks up the hillside. At its southern end the trail loops around a small ravine filled with a surprisingly open grove of impressive redwoods, the literal and figurative high point of the hike. Despite a thick carpet of ferns, the grove is slightly arid-looking for the North Coast. A few yards away, a low ridge with a natural break in the old growth separates this little grove from the main body of Headwaters’ ancient forest. From the end of the loop, return the way you came. Total of 10.7 miles.

Strawberry Rock Trail is a single track gravel and dirt trail through timber company land to the Strawberry Rock lookout. The trail is often muddy and shady, with large roots and rocks in the path. The trail is popular especially during weekends and summer. Some would consider this difficult. I would check to see if the trail is open before heading out.

Great spot to go hang at a remote beach or to go clamming. Safe clamming is usually October to May. Be careful when you are at the end of the jetty. The waves have been known to sweep people away. Always check the tides before going out. Sneaker waves is a real thing here. Most recent sneaker wave death was 12/7/2020.
