View the Clifton Suspension Bridge upside down through the camera obscura, and climb down through the cliff (steep steps: claustrophobia alert) to pop out on a balcony carved into the side of the Avon Gorge (head for heights also needed!)

A little bit of a trip from Portishead, but if you're in the Mendips, a must to visit. Lots of (cheddar) cheese shops and caves, and a popular venue for both road cyclists and motorbikers as well as climbers and coach tours.

Sandy beach, donkey rides, the sand sculpture festival, ice creams, fish and chips outlets, arcades, lido, night life, seaquarium, crazy golf, out-of-town shopping, holiday parks... it's all here!

Lovely seafront promenade with an old-fashioned bandstand, sometimes playing host to musicians. Great place for a gentle stroll.

The BeachYou'll get some cracking photos of this beautiful pier against the gorgeous sunsets of this coastline. A surprising find, amongst a very ordinary housing estate. Close to Blaise Castle House and Estate which is open to the public.

With boating on the lake, dogs jumping in after balls, nesting birds on the lake's island and model boat enthusiasts, there's always something to see on the lake. You can walk all around it, past the lido and Battery Point viewpoint, outdoor tennis courts (available to hire), cricket ground, rose garden, children's play area and cafe, enjoying the open space to picnic, walk the dog, or enjoy a ball game. Walk along the promenade (which forms part of the Portishead to Clevedon coastal path) with plenty of parking from where you can watch the ships coming in and out of the nearby docks, skimming the land closely and dwarfing Battery Point (the closest approach of shipping to land in the UK). A cafe on site serves ice cream, drinks and snacks and there are toilet facilities (bring spare change!)

Whilst there are railings/barriers in many places around the marina, small children should be carefully supervised around the marina because of the risk of falling in (deep, cold water and steep sides.) Life rings are provided in places.
