With space to walk all the way around the marina, watch the leisure craft locking in and out, bars, restaurants, and access to the coastal path and nature reserve, this is a great place to while away a few hours taking in the scenery.

Who could visit Bristol and not see the iconic Clifton suspension bridge, designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel, and spanning the Avon Gorge. Drive, cycle, motorcyle or walk across on either side. (Motor vehicles pay a £1 toll each way.)

Brunel's magnificent screw-propeller iron steamship is now a wonderful museum. Launched in 1843 to great acclaim, her rusting hulk was rescued from the Falkland Islands, towed back to Bristol, and now conserved for posterity. Makes a fascinating day trip out.

Bristol - home to Banksy? Bristolians certainly claim him as their own and the city proudly boasts a number of his artworks / graffiti (you decide which). But it's not only Banksy who has contributed to the city's colourful street scenes. You can find walking tours to discover many of them for yourself.

A little bit of a trip from Portishead, but if you're in the Mendips, a must to visit. Lots of (cheddar) cheese shops and caves, and a popular venue for both road cyclists and motorbikers as well as climbers and coach tours.

With boating on the lake, dogs jumping in after balls, nesting birds on the lake's island and model boat enthusiasts, there's always something to see on the lake. You can walk all around it, past the lido and Battery Point viewpoint, outdoor tennis courts (available to hire), cricket ground, rose garden, children's play area and cafe, enjoying the open space to picnic, walk the dog, or enjoy a ball game. Walk along the promenade (which forms part of the Portishead to Clevedon coastal path) with plenty of parking from where you can watch the ships coming in and out of the nearby docks, skimming the land closely and dwarfing Battery Point (the closest approach of shipping to land in the UK). A cafe on site serves ice cream, drinks and snacks and there are toilet facilities (bring spare change!)

Bristol Zoo's outdoor enclosures host its larger animals and those needing bigger spaces, like its giraffe, wolves and lemurs. Cheaper in the winter months, although the animals don't seem to think much of the British winter so you will see many more of them.out and about in the summer months.

Neighbourhoods

Portishead is a vibrant town catering for all ages. It's grown in size in the last 15 years with the new housing development around the marina, attracting families, young and older professionals, and retirees into the area. Despite its size, it retains a great community spirit, hosting an annual carnival, raft race, flower shows, sporting events, marina, food and beer festivals, and the Christmas lights switch on, and Victorian evening. Crime is low, and people here tend to look out for each other.

Bristol is a bustling, vibrant city, home to people of many ethnicities and faiths. Recently it's been in the news when Edward Colston's statue was toppled by Black Lives Matter protestors, in frustration at the failed democratic process around giving context to Colston's slave-trading business on which his weath and philanthropy were based. Bristol has a proud history of rioting, but in its more peaceful times it loves a good festival - and hosts an annual harbour festival, hot air balloon festival, music and food festivals, which brings everyone out in party spirit.

Marina safety

Whilst there are railings/barriers in many places around the marina, small children should be carefully supervised around the marina because of the risk of falling in (deep, cold water and steep sides.) Life rings are provided in places.
