The most popular place for shave ice is Matsumoto’s in Haleiwa, but the best TASTING is the all natural fruit flavored shave ice made at Island X Hawaii in the old Waialua Sugar Mill. Our favorites are lilikoi, mango and pineapple. Also, you can pick up some great locally made treasures to remind you of your Hawaiian vacation.

The best mom n’ pop/hole in the wall lunch spot: Waialua Bakery & Juice Bar. Disclaimer – our family owns and operates this place and most of the produce used is grown on the family farm in Mokuleia. From fresh roasted turkey to homemade bread to farm fresh smoothies – it’s simply the best.

Sightseeing

Best place for a sunset picnic: Waimea Bay. Bring food and show up later in the day (4-5 PM) to get a parking spot. This place is usually crowded in the morning and middle of the day but people start to leave in the afternoon.

The popular spot to see and snorkel with turtles is a beach called Lani’s (or Turtle Beach). It can get very crowded and the parking across the street is not easy to maneuver. You can see and snorkel with turtles via the beach access on Papailoa Road, a secluded nice neighborhood right after you pass Lani’s. There’s parking for about 10-15 cars. Once you get to the beach, turn left and walk down a couple of minutes to the reef shelf/cove.

Another place that usually has turtles sunning themselves is Ali’i Beach Park. Popular for surfing right in front of the showers, but if you head to the left of the surf center there is a calm, shallow part of the beach where turtles often are. The parking lot here is much more convenient.

If you are interested in surfing but not fully committed or a little scared to take a lesson, rent a stand-up paddle board from Surf n’ Sea in Haleiwa ($20/hour) and paddle in the calm and very scenic Haleiwa river. You’ll be able to stand up on a surfboard without ever having to catch a wave.

Swimming with the sharks is NOT scary. These really are beautiful creatures. Book an early morning departure as this is when the water is calm and the ride offshore will be smooth.

Beautiful valley walk that ends in a waterfall you and your family can swim in. This is such a great place that our family has an annual pass and we come here often. Also can get a great grass-fed burger on a taro bun with sweet potato fries. Yum! Followed by shave ice after your walk back from the waterfall :)

The Iconic Pipeline Wave. The third and final contest of the infamous Triple Crown surf contest is held here every winter. This is the best spot to watch the big waves of the North Shore in the winter. In the summer it'll most likely be flat...but, this is still a great beach park for swimming, seashell collecting and snorkeling. There is a shower and bathrooms as well.

Local Activities

There is a great yoga co-op with awesome instructors located in Waialua. It is donation-based so you pay what you like. Monday nights at 6:30 PM and Thursday nights at 5:30 PM offer a great workout. And of course there are classes for every level. Check the schedule at www.northshoreyoga.org. The town of Waialua is a bit of a drive from the condo (about 30-40 minutes), but if you have the time, it's worth it. Closer to the condo, at Waimea Valley, are yoga classes offered by North Shore Yoga Oahu on MWF from 7:30 - 8:30 AM. Check their Facebook page for updated info. Great outside location for classes.

Local favorite hike, a good workout with views over our general aviation airport PHDH (Dillingham Airport). Hike and watch skydivers and listen to gliders silently whistling past you. Not to mention the spectacular ocean and sunset views. A little steep in some spots, about a 700 ft elevation gain, beautiful view once you reach the top. The hike to the top takes 45 min – 1 hour, avoid after multiple days of rain.

Peacock Flats is another good hike – all paved road, about 900 foot elevation gain over 3 1⁄2 miles. It can get hot so bring water. The gates are closed to cars but hikers can easily get through or go around the wide gates.

There are great bike trails near the Turtle Bay Hotel. A fun family adventure! You can rent bikes directly off of the Turtle Bay website, but a much cheaper option would be to rent through North Shore Bike Rentals. And they will deliver the bikes to you! Or you could explore the other bike rental companies on the North Shore. If you can transport the bikes, enjoy the ride on the scenic 6 mile bike path meanders from Shark's Cove beach to Velzyland too.
