Ideal spot for a light lunch when exploring town. Salads, spanish omelettes, quiches, veg, hummus, chutneys - pile a plate high for £7. They also do excellent cakes.

Pubs + bars

The Galli is our fave local pub - cosy in winter, with outdoor space in summer to soak up the rays and Gloucester Road vibes. The food is solid and live music is practically every night.

We love the Kenny. The food is excellent, they are dog friendly and we always take our parents there when we need a slap up Sunday roast. Also good for a more relaxed drink in the evenings or a summer afternoon, or indeed anytime.

Good value eateries

Strip lighting, ever so slightly sticky floors and wonderful smells emanating from the basement kitchen - Dev's is our go-to Indian. Our friend Rosh who is from Kerala assures us it's the real deal. Do not expect anything fancy or to part with more than 50 quid but do expect great vibes and to call ahead on weekends to make sure there's a table. Make sure you bring your own beer and order from the Keralan specials menu.

Not the one for interior decor but the food here is to die for - thai barbecued meat falling off the bone with fragrant sticky rice, divine tom yum that will take the roof of your mouth off, platters of fish and seafood with little pots of delicious sauce served on the side plus the friendliest service you have ever experienced. Jean used to work for a Michelin place and you can tell. Portions are generous, make sure you leave room for the green matcha cake. Bring your own.

Really nice vibes, fun and spicy Sri Lankan small plates, bags of choice, good service. The slickness of a chain without the feel of one.

Bang in the middle of buzzing Stokes Croft, with dim lighting and exciting Mezcal Cocktails, you could probably visit this place a few times and not exhaust the menu which is Mexican small plates. The staff are super friendly and the food is tasty. Good for a drink too. Book on weekends.

If you haven't been to Bristol before, Thali is a bit of an institution here and should be tried if you like Indian food. Expect light healthy curries and lovely daal. A local favourite in the heart of Montpelier.

Something a bit special

Easily the best Tapas in Bristol. Dishes range in price. Either book 3 weeks in advance or chance it at 6pm and hope you can squeeze onto the bar. Incredible vibe, aioli to knock your socks off. Do not expect any sense of personal space.

A bright, mediterranean vibed restaurant overlooking the famous Clifton Lido pool - it feels buzzy and special here all the time. Come any time of day - coffee, lunch, afternoon tea and for tapas or 3 course in the evenings when the lights glimmer over the pool. The kitchen churn out marvellous wood-fired things usually with a large price tag. We recommend booking in for a swim package where you get to use the pool and facilities for a couple of hours and then get some form of meal included usually for about £45 pp which is basically a total bargain here. Oh and order the scallops. Not talking about the pub next door which is fine but nothing to write home about.
