Food scene

An historic pub next door to an ancient church in the heart of a tucked away village. Does amazing Sunday lunches and in the Summer, you can sit outside in the garden next to the river. Dog friendly and child friendly. You can walk there over the fields from the apartment (7 mile round trip) or drive (about 10 mins).

Best place for a cream tea in North Cornwall! Prize winning farm shop and restaurant selling home cooked food (and delicious cakes!) with a view over the SW coast path. Most of the meat they serve is home reared too.

Nicest local cafe and very close to the apartment! All the food is nice, but we particularly like the award winning (homemade) fish finger sandwiches and savoury cream teas! Open for breakfast.

Our favourite restaurant for a splurge in PI. All the fish is local and very, very fresh. We go for the tasting menu (a bit of a blow out at GBP50 a head) because you get to try everything without feeling stuffed at the end of it. Highly recommended by everyone, not just us!

Our local pub. What more can we say? Cosy in front of the fire in the winter, and a sun trap on the balcony in the summer. Still a 'proper' pub but it serves food too - the fish and chips are nice.

The best pub food in the area. Cosy pub only a short walk away from the apartment, serving excellent food with an emphasis on local ingredients. Dog friendly. Very snuggy in front of the fire in the winter and a sun trap in the summer. Well worth the up and down walk from the apartment to get there.

Home cooked food and delicious cakes, and easy to walk to from the apartment. You'll deserve some cake after you've walked up Church Hill to get there!

Doesn't look much but serves the best ice cream around. The chocolate orange is a particular favourite - worth travelling for :-))

Located in the Hawksfield development just outside Wadebridge, this is a trendy cafe serving good food and coffee - especially breakfasts. The breakfast burrito is particularly good.

Neighbourhoods

Tiny village tucked away in a secluded cove - now owned by the National Trust. You can walk there from the apartment - either along the coast path (lots of ups and downs) or inland along the footpaths (slightly fewer ups and downs). In Summer you can reward yourself with a coffee at the Salt Pig, a funky cafe converted from a vintage French lorry. In Winter, there's nothing there apart from seagulls and the occasional other visitor.

Old harbour where slate used to be loaded on to ships. Attractive walks along the coast path in either direction. Worth walking there from the apartment (about 10 mins) on a windy day to watch the waves crashing on the headland - and to visit the Port Gaverne Hotel for a cheeky beverage.

Closest surfing beach to Port Isaac, about a 10 min drive away. Can get busy in the Summer, but out of season it's a great place to have a bracing walk, swim or surf. You can hire boards and wetsuits on the beach, and book lessons if you think you need them. Parking on the beach at low tide. Several cafes open all year round for a restoring beverage.

Sightseeing

Great beach for kiting, windsurfing and anything that relies on a lot of wind! When the tide is out, you can walk along the beach past the headland all the way to Rock. Dog friendly. Walk about half a mile inland across the golf course and you'll reach the old church of St Enodoc with its wonky spire. It's also where the poet John Betjeman is buried.

A fun way to travel between Rock and Padstow. Also saves a long drive to Padstow - just park at the quarry car park in Rock and catch the ferry instead. Dogs and bikes are allowed on board for a small fee.

About a 10 min walk from the car park on the road to New Polzeath, Lundy Bay is a hidden beach only accessible at low tide. Great views from the coast path round there and on the way to Polzeath.

Walk into Lanhydrock and you think you're in someone's home, and they've just nipped out for a while. Left to the National Trust with most of its contents, it's locked in an early 20th century time bubble. Good place to visit on a rainy day.

Dinky house and gardens dating back to the early Tudor period but in use as a family home until the 1970s. You can try on armour and period clothing, play Elizabethan garden games and rummage around the second hand bookshop. Small but cute.
