This idyllic village is only accessible by sea or hiking and so those who live and work here are fully in-tune with the ocean before them. Knossos is known as Europe’s oldest city and was once the great seat of the Minoan civilisation. The Palace of Knossos has a long and intricate past dating from the Neolithic period but was excavated and discovered in the early 1900s by archaeologist Sir Arthur Evans. Evans made the discovery of the Palace and the surrounding settlements, with his knowledge of King Minos and the myth of the Minotaur, he called the civilisation, The Minoans. This incredible site is now open to the public where tours are available at the entrance and ticket office. Guided tours are available on request in many languages. We also recommend that you visit the Archaeological Museum in the centre of the city to gain a better understanding of this historical site. Tickets for both of these attractions can be purchased together. Heraklion is a city with a long and historical past, much like the ancient city of Knossos. Take a walk around the city walls and through its heart to experience the perfect blend of history and a modern-day city.

Balos is famous for its turquoise waters, pink shores and warm lagoons. This picturesque landscape is a must-see haven when visiting the island of Crete. During the summer months this is a very popular destination and there is no natural shade provided by the landscape. We also advise bringing your own food and water but leave nothing but footprints behind and take all rubbish with you. We recommend the best way to get to Balos/Gramvoussa is by doing the organised boat trips from the port of Kissamos, this is best and safest way to this beautiful lagoon. Tickets for the boat trip can be organised at the port and run every day in the summer. For timetables and more please visit cretandailycruises.com and go to Balos/Gramvousa. Passengers are required to be at the port 40 minutes before departure. It is also recommended to bring walking shoes as there is a hike to the top of Gramvousa Island to see the remains of the castle of Pirate Island.

Seitan Limani is a beach that was long thought inaccessible but in recent years has become very popular for its unique landscape and location. This location does require walking down a very steep un-specified path/rocks so we do recommend that good footwear is worn and not flip-flops or beach shoes for the descent/ascent. Because of its location there are also no facilities on this beach including no bathrooms or refreshments so please bare this in mind and take your own snacks and drinks. Be warned there are also some local Kri Kri goats that may appear as they have learnt it’s an area for food. Please remember that they are wild but if you have the chance to see them, it certainly is an experience. They are indigenous to Crete.

Glyka Nera is a peaceful and unique place to swim. The fresh water, from the mountains, runs into the sea here and locals say the freshwater tastes sweet, and is drinkable, hence the local name “Sweet Water”. There are refreshment boats here which adds to its unique experience.
Mamara is a must-see beach that has crystal-clear waters and soothing sands. There are also the caves of Mamara which are breath-taking and just round the cove close to the bay. Here at marmara, just up on the cliff-top is a stunning and traditional taverna with a breath-taking view over the ocean.

Falassana is located 50km west of Chania on the western coast with a stunning landscape and a rich history. Its turquoise waters and large expanses of sand are a must see for all the beach lovers and water sports enthusiasts. Falassana can be divided into 5 beaches, the first (to the south) being well organised with a large selection of sunbeds, umbrellas and beach bars. The second, third, fourth and fifth beaches (to the north) are significantly less organised and your advised to bring your own umbrellas etc but they do offer a quieter and more unique experience of Falassana. The ancient city of Falassana is something to be seen. This incredible city was once thriving and had its own currency. It was once at the front of Greek Naval forces and strength until the fall of the city to pirates causing the port to be sealed by the Romans in 69BC, the city finally being abandoned in the 4th century AD. The incredible structure of the port is actually inland due to an earthquake in 365BC which elevated the land by 9m.

Gramvousa is a small island overlooking the lagoon of Balos. It is most famously known for being a pirate island and the castle remains at the top of the island are remanets of its turbulent past. The boat trip from the port of Kissamos to Balos will stop here on its tour where you will have time to hike to the top with many steps or relax and swim in the turquoise waters below. A shipwreck can also be seen from the shore. Panoramic views from the top of Gramvousa Island are definitely worth the climb. Please wear suitable footwear if you plan to walk to the top.
