Paluma is a village surrounded by Wet Tropics World Heritage rainforest. At 1000ft above sea level, it offers a much cooler climate than nearby Townsville. Known as the Village in the Mist, the clouds sweep in every evening, creating a visual wonderland. Residents are fiercely proud of their beautiful village, evidenced by extensive gardens, quaint well-kept cottages, and a stunning village green. Popular with naturalists, including Sir David Attenborough, Paluma boasts the outstanding biological diversity of a montane tropical rainforest. Uniquely, the birds here has been treasured by locals for decades, and responsible feeding has developed generations of birds who co-exist with residents without fear. Species frequently seen at the cottage include: Victoria's Rifle Bird, Satin Bowerbirds, Spotted Catbird, Lewin's Honeyeater, McLeay's Honeyeater, White Cheeked Honeyeater, Fig Parrots, Shrike Thrush, Mistletoe Birds, Currawongs, Silvereyes, Eastern Spinebills, Crimson Rosellas, Barred Cuckoo Shrikes, Spectacled Monarchs and, of course, Australian Bush Turkeys. It is a twitcher's paradise! There are several rainforest walks close to the cottage, and nearby Birthday Creek Falls and the Paluma Dam provide swimming opportunities. We hope that visitors will love our rainforest home as we do, so if you have an interest in ecology, please get in touch before booking or arriving. We would love to share our knowledge with you and can provide further information on the local flora and fauna, just call!!
There are several things which make Paluma unique. The first is the Wet Tropics World Heritage rainforest which surrounds the village, with its amazing flora and fauna. The second is the history of the village, seen throughout and signposted appropriately to take you back in time. Most importantly, it is the residents, my friends and neighbours, who will greet you with a smile and invite you in for a cuppa. It is these wonderful people who have made such a vibrant and supportive community, despite or perhaps because of their isolation, they stick together and really care for each other.
