“Orkneys premier neolithic site and a must see for any visitor. This site takes you all the way back 5000 years to a time when the early inhabitants of Orkney lived and worked. Be warned this can be a busy place, especially if there are cruise liners in port, so plan your visit carefully to avoid disappointment. ”

“The Italian Chapel is a highly ornate Catholic chapel on Lamb Holm in the Orkney Islands. It was built during World War II by Italian prisoners of war, who were housed on the previously uninhabited island while they constructed the Churchill Barriers to the east of Scapa Flow. Only the concrete foundations of the other buildings of the prisoner-of-war camp survive. It was not completed until after the end of the war, and was restored in the 1960s and again in the 1990s.”

“A must see. Now known to pre date Stonehenge. The adjacent "Neolithic Cathedral" is currently being excavated, and you can watch the archaeologists at work during the summer (check your dates). It is thought to be the hub from which the Neolithic expanded out over the British Isles and Northern Europe. ”
