Another fun place to visit is Newton, NC . Newton is a 10 minutes drive just on the other side of Conover. They have a lovely historical downtown area. The Old Court House there has been converted into a museum. They host many outdoor festivals and events. It has a small movie theater “The State Cinema” It was recently remodeled and shows all new movies. It’s across from Geppetto’s pizza parlor and down the street from several other great restaurants, wine shops and other specialty shops. Newton also has a community swimming pool, open to the public for a small admission fee. On a bigger scale The Kool Park Pool is a great way to spend a hot summer day. It’s in Hickory. It’s a nice, well maintain pool with slides created to look like cliffs. It also has a huge diving board. It’s open to the public but is a little more expensive. To get your money’s worth you may want to plan to stay all day. You can take your own food/snacks/drinks. They play good music on loud speakers and it gives you a tropical fun feeling. They do sell concessions but it’s really easy to throw a cooler in the trunk with drinks and snacks. BTW, I have a cooler for you.
The American Legion Fairground hosts a huge flee market every Thursday. It’s open to the public with free admission. You can find some of everything at this flee market. They have anything from a fresh bouquet a flowers, homegrown vegetables to used car parts. The county fair is held there every September. It hosts car shows regularly and Relay for Life in the spring. It’s located on Hwy 70 off exit 128 on 1-40.

Hickory also has a huge AMC movie theater with 14 screens and a new addition with reclining leather theater seats with the largest movie screen in the area. They serve real food... Target with a Starbucks, Kohl’s, TJ Max, Ross, Party City, Barnes & Nobles with a Starbucks and another 24 hour Walmart all are off Exit 125.
Not sure that anyone traveling would have the time or need to visit our local animal shelters, Catawba Valley Humane Society, but we do have 2 really nice locations in the exit 125 area. They are no kill shelters that have primarily Dog and Cats but at times have bunnies, chickens and horses that need homes.
There are many, many, many restaurants on HWY 70 ( Catawba Valley Blvd) off I-40 Exit 125. Hickory is one exit further up heading west.
Hickory’s downtown area is referred to as The Hickory Square, it also has many upscale restaurants as well as fast food and casual dining choices. They also that a movie theater, The Carolina theater.

There’s also Frye Regional Life Point. It’s close to Hickory Downtown area, exit 125 off I-40. Both hospitals have Emergency Rooms and are open 24 hours. There are several urgent cares in the area open day time hours.
There are many pharmacy’s/drug stores in the area. The closest would be inside the 24hour Walmart on Hwy 16, near my house. The Walmart is open 24 hours but the eye center with eye doctor and the pharmacy are only open during day time hours. This Walmart has an automotive center on the right side, toward the back, outside of the Walmart building. It stays open until 8pm. This comes in handy if you are traveling and have issues with brakes, tires or battery.
If you were to need prescriptions filled after business hours in the area you only have two option for 24 hour pharmacy’s Walgreens in Hickory and CVS.
Food delivery services such as Grub Hub and Door Dash deliver to my home from most restaurants in the area. You would need to download their free app and type in my address to see who is open for deliveries as times vary in the early morning and late in the evening. We use both services often and are always pleased with the quick and easy service. They do charge delivery fees and some have a minimum food purchase amount. The check out screen is very easy to read and calculates the delivery cost as well as allowing you to give a tip during the check out.
Domino’s Pizza in Conover also delivers. You can call in or download their app with my address for delivery or pick up. They have the least expensive delivery fee and they are usually fast and alway good.
