“The Academy was built in the 1784 when the Grand Duke of Tuscany Pietro Leopoldo reorganized the Academy of the Arts of Design, founded in 1563 by Cosimo I de'Medici, in the modern Academy of Fine Arts. The new institution occupied the rooms of the fourteenth century of San Matteo Hospital and those of the convent of San Niccolò di Cafaggio. The museum was enriched with the suppression of churches and convents ordered by Pietro Leopoldo in 1786 and by Napoleone Bonaparte in 1810. The decisive event in the history of the museum was the transfer of Michelangelo's David from Piazza della Signoria in August 1873. The most famous sculpture in the world waited nine years, kept in a wooden case, the conclusion of the construction of the Tribune designed by the architect Emilio De Fabris to welcome it. Today's Academy Gallery was established in 1882.”

“This square and its church remain in the heart of the people of Florence. The arcade of the Istituto degli Innocenti, along one of the sides of the square, is the early masterpiece of Filippo Brunnelleschi (before he built the dome). Inside the immense baroque church, I love Andrea del Castagno's San Girolamo, a great overlooked example of Renaissance art. Don't miss the Museum degl'Innocenti, if you have time.”

“The Ospedale degli Innocenti (Italian pronunciation: [ospeˈdaːle deʎʎ innoˈtʃɛnti]; 'Hospital of the Innocents', also known in old Tuscan dialect as the Spedale degli Innocenti) is a historic building in Florence, Italy. It was designed by Filippo Brunelleschi,[1][2] who received the commission in 1419 from the Arte della Seta. It was originally a children's orphanage. It is regarded as a notable example of early Italian Renaissance architecture. The hospital, which features a nine bay loggia facing the Piazza SS. Annunziata, was built and managed by the "Arte della Seta" or Silk Guild of Florence.[3] That guild was one of the wealthiest in the city and, like most guilds, took upon itself philanthropic duties. ”

“"Art and nature" could be the motto of this extraordinary museum dedicated to semi-precious stone inlays, where artistic talent competes only with the splendour of the materials employed. It was the passion of the Medici for this precious form of art that led Grand Duke Ferdinando I de'Medici to establish in 1588 a court laboratory specialised in semi-precious mosaics and inlays. This grand ducal institution, which remained active for down three centuries, was the core of the Opificio delle Pietre Dure, established at the end of the 19th century, which still has its seat in the original location chosen in 1798 for the laboratories formerly housed in the Uffizi.”
