“Located on Douglas Island this is a family favorite. We have had many dinners with friends over the 46 years we have lived here. This was one of the first restaurants we were taken to as newcomers. ”

“This is the one and only beach to take the little ones so they can walk in the sand. "Sandy Beach" is how the locals know this area. There is a play area and covered shelters (available to rent). It is also the access point to the historic Treadwell mining area (where do you think the sand came from).”

“My personal favorite place to get a drink. The owner remodeled it into a nice local watering hole from a run down dive. It still has a ton of charm, a pool table, and friendly bartenders.”

“This is where there was once a mine. There are still buildings and plaques placed there. The mine tailings left what we call Sandy Beach. Great place to ponder the strength of people who were here before it was a city. Easy trails for all levels.”

“The Treadwell Historic Trail stretches from Savikko Park through much of the Treadwell complex. It's a nice trail - relatively flat, wide and shady. The ruins of Treadwell are visible everywhere. Metal lies in the undergrowth, the fragments of walls and foundations rise between trees, the tower of the salt water pumping plant rises out in the channel. The area is used by dog walkers, tourists, the high school cross country team, cross-country skiers and any Juneauite who enjoys a nice walk, but the history of the mining complex is almost as obscure as its ruins. “Drive to the end of Thane Road, park, and look for the Dupont Dock trail. It's one of my favorite flat hikes in Juneau. You'll go through the forest for about a mile, but at the end you'll be in a quiet cove with an old shipping dock on in the water. Cool spot, you'll have it to yourselves.”
