The apartment.

A perfect location in Ajijic: you are right there in the middle of everything. 2 bedroom apartment, 1 bathroom, kitchen and living room. Good size: 90 m2. Swimming pool and garden. Wheelchair facilities. All furnished, cable tv, internet, fully equiped. Right in the middle of Ajijic, very near to buses, restaurants, cinemas and shops. 5 minute walk to lake and to the best cafes, shops and art galleries. Great view of mountains from the apartment. A place for relaxing and having great fun. Apartment is very well connected to Chapala village and to Guadalajara city. You don´t need a car. Apartment is within a small condo surrounded by gate: SECURITY IS VERY GOOD. It is a very safe spot. Apartments within condo are arranged around a small beautiful swimming pool and have access to patio space with tables and chairs were you can have meals enjoying the spectacular views of the mountains. A lovely mexican family lives within the compound and takes care of the property ensuring round the clock safety. A cell phone is available during the stay with no additional cost. Cleaning fees are included in the price.

Location and climate.

Ajijic is a town about 3 miles from Chapala, situated on the north shore of Lake Chapala, surrounded by mountains, and enjoying a moderate climate year round. December and January are the coolest months and May is the hottest, just before the onset of the rainy season. Overall, there is very little temperature variation year round: daytime highs in January are around 75 degrees; daytime highs in July are around 80 to 90 degrees.

A Little History.

Up until the arrival of the Spanish, the region was occupied by nomadic Indian tribes, probably the Cocas tribe that settled the northern shore. There seem to be many explanations, and meanings for the names Chapala and Ajijic, all of which are Indian place names, probably derived from Nahuatl, the native language of the area.

In 1924 British author D.H. Lawrence stayed in Ajijic and loved it so much so that he incorporated the town into his novel The Plumed Serpent. Nearly 100 years after D.H. Lawrence immortalized Ajijic and the surrounding Lake Chapala area, swarms and hordes of American and Canadian ex-pats have made it home. Additionally, American writer Dane Chandos settled in Ajijic before World War II and wrote two books about life there: Village in the Sun (1945, G.P. Putnam's Sons), which concerns his efforts to build a house on the edge of the lake, and House in the Sun (1949), which concerns his operation of a small inn in the house.

The Town

Ajijic´s streets are narrow, paved with cobblestones, Most homes are behind stone or brick walls, many with surprisingly spacious grounds. The sounds of the village are everywhere - church bells, horses' hooves, the loud speaker of the gas truck, the bell of the water truck, the musical theme of the ice cream man, and calls of various other vendors. Ajijic continues to retain its Mexican identity, while at the same time catering to tourists, with hotels, B & Bs and restaurants galore - more, probably, than in any other Mexican village of its size.

Olga's place was delightful. The location is fabulous for exploring the city. The bus stop is right outside the gate and it's about a 10 minute walk to the main plaza. Toritos, the supermarket, is about a 5 minute walk as is the market on Wednesdays. There is a little noise from the traffic but it was muffled and did not bother us. The neighbors were so helpful. They were the best thing about our trip. There is a laundry about two blocks away to take your clothes and drop off. Don't forget to get them washed only and go on the roof to hang them out. The view up there is fantastic. We really loved it here and will be back. Bring sturdy shoes as the cobblestones can be difficult to walk on. We really enjoyed sitting outside in the courtyard to have coffee in the morning or wine in the evening. The pool is lovely but a little chilly in November. We did go in a couple times though. Not to be missed: riding the bus all around, the market on Wednesdays, going to the square for coffee and watching the people, exploring all the lovely restaurants, walking on the Malecon, practicing Spanish with the neighbors. This is not an exclusive "epat" enclave which made me very happy.

Olga checked in with us a couple of times and Yanni was on site to assist with any questions we had.

Overall, the apartment worked out well. It was a very neat and fairly basic apartment in a good location. Although it was almost right beside the main road through Ajijic, the apartment was fairly quite (although windows occasionally rattled from traffic). It has some permanent Mexican neighbors renting adjacent apartments, including an onsite manager. All were friendly and helpful. Pool was clean but a bit cool (as to be expected) in January.

My sister and I stayed at Olga's place 43 days. We were made to feel welcome from the first day and Carmen and her family who live on the property were very helpful with water and gas. We felt very safe all the time we were there. The unit pretty well matched the description on airbnb. It is very well situated and we could walk to everything in the village and to the lake. The bus stop was outside the gate if you wanted to travel further. Largest grocery store in the village is 2 blocks away. The bar around the corner and across the street would have music on Friday night but it seemed to stop at eleven o'clock. Pool was well cared for. Unit was clean and free of all insects. We had a good experience and would return again.

Olga's apartment is conveniently located within walking distance of everything in Ajijic. There is off street parking behind a locked gate. Also, the WiFi connection was a very fast 10 MBS. I enjoyed my stay there.

My 1-month stay was delightful. The apartment is safe, quiet, comfortable, clean and just as represented. The location is in easy walking distance to the core downtown square, shops and restaurants. Highly recommended!
