Bohemia in Chile!
Perfect location, outstanding experience, for the right guest. Jose is our new best friend, as he is to most of Valparaiso.
Firstly, the location is wonderful on a beautiful, colorful alley in the heart of Cerro Concepcion. You are steps from great restaurants, wonderful local artists, and all the music and street art that you can handle. And the views from Valparaiso's famous Paseos are a block or two away. On arrival, Anna Maria brought us fresh fruit, and Jose was always minutes away for any need we had.
If you ask Jose (a musician himself), he will take you on a tour of "his town" and will introduce you to every local artist, musician, magician, jeweler, etc. as he can not walk 10 steps without getting a hello and a hug from one of his infinite "best friends". You will get a view of Valparaiso from the local perspective, a truly unique experience. Our taxi driver commented that if Jose ran for mayor, he'd win in a landslide, and we believe it. Jose's laugh is as infectious as it gets. We spent 6 hours touring with Jose on our first day, and he insisted on taking us to the Mercado Cardonal for lunch the next day, another great local experience.
The home itself is shared with a young group of artists, furniture makers, musicians, etc. They are as friendly as can be, but we still found it very quiet at bed time. To be clear, this is not a luxury hotel. The room is large (15 foot ceilings) and clean, but the bathroom is not up to US hotel standards, but all is functional. And with Jose and Anna Maria, you will want for nothing. Make sure you ask for help, or you will end up taking a cold shower like I did, not realizing that I needed to light the water heater first, completely my fault. Jose apologized profusely for not letting me know, which is just indicative of how much he cares for his guests' comfort. There is a small kitchen available, a wonderful balcony to relax on, sitting room, etc., but we recommend getting out and exploring the city, ideally with Jose at your side.
My son and I are pretty free-going, spontaneous and adventurous (we were in Chile for a weekend from the US). We did not know what to expect with Valparaiso or this AirBnB, and we were the first visitors for Jose and Anna Maria, but we left with an experience we will never forget. If you want to get to really know Valparaiso, and particularly Cerro Concepcion, and get the local experience, this is a great stay. If you are looking for luxury and touristy accommodations, you will perhaps be disappointed. And you will miss out on the best part of getting to know Valparaiso.
Without question, we would stay again at this AirBnB. In fact, Jose, and "his town" alone are worth the trip to Valparaiso.
