Hostel Kilimanjaro is situated in a peaceful native village a short drive from the town of Moshi in Tanzania. It is a comfortable, clean place to stay and with western facilities. Michelle, the manager, lives on the premises and is available to help you with any requests or problems you may have. She can arrange safe, reliable taxis for you, including airport transfers. Whether you want to volunteer with local charities, climb Kilimanjaro or go on a safari, all this can be arranged for you. There are two private rooms or a four bed shared dormitory. Ample lockable storage is in every room, a large kitchen and lounge and two shower facilities. The cost is £14 per person per night, which includes breakfast and an evening meal. Menus are tailored to guests requirements and all meals are freshly cooked.
Mbokomu is a rural wooded area with properties built among the trees where the native Tanzanian people live. Michelle has lived there since August 2010 and is well known and respected by the local community. A short taxi ride away is a lovely swimming pool with an outside bar/ restaurant where Michelle and the guests often go in their free time to relax.
The town of Moshi has a selection of bars, restaurants and cafes. There is also Moshi Springs, cared for by a local man called Samwelli. It is a beautiful wooded area surrounding a spring which flows down from Kilimanjaro. This water source provides a supply for several local villages. Samwelli works very hard, with the help of volunteers and local people, to propagate indigenous species of trees and shrubs. He gives talks to local schools to impress upon the population the importance of replanting areas that have been deforested and are becoming barren. He also makes paper from banana leaves, on which local artists paint striking African pictures which are for sale.
The hostel is situated in an area which will give you a taste of the real Africa, but you will have the comforts of western facilities.
There are large free standing fans in all rooms. The two private rooms share a shower/toilet room and there is another ensuite facility for the dormitory. The beds are very comfortable and mosquito nets are provided.
The kitchen has a dual fuel cooker and a fridge freezer. There is ample storage and cupboard space for guests. 24 hour on site security is in place and there is ample lockable storage in all bedrooms.
Michelle has two dogs at the property which are very friendly, but not a nuisance. They remain outside at night with the guard.
Bed linen is provided and, for a small fee a local lady will do your washing for you. Hand washing facilities are available. You will be expected to tidy up after yourself, and guests usually get involved with the choice, cooking and clearing up after the evening meal. Guests are expected to treat others in the house with consideration at all times. No smoking is allowed inside the hostel, but a covered verandah area with seating is available on the porch.
