Karibu at the Shamba Bed&Breakfast in the green hills of the Central Higlands, afoot the Mount Kenia- and Aberdare-National Park. Wether you just stay for a night or for two weeks you shall feel welcome and truly feel at home. If you want a change from just another tourist hotel Mahinda offers you a place to relax before you go on with your travel or to stay for while with him.

The house sits within a large shamba (garden) in a rural area. A small veranda opens into a living room with a separate dining area. To the right side of the house there is a separate tract with two separate guestrooms and a separate bathroom only for our guests.

You will have a truly kenian experience off the beaten track. Since the rate is including full board we wil be happy to serve you local and traditionell food, mostly out of produce from the own garden (shamba). You are more than welcome to help harvesting your dinner.

Part of the compound is a large fruit and vegetable garden (Shamba), where among other things maize, sweet potatoes, bananas, arrowroot and potatoes are grown. Depending on the season you may pick mangoes, passionfruits, physalis, pomegranate and more for your breakfast table.

The compound is situated in the Highlands of the Central Province, in Ihururu, 12 km from Nyeri and can be reached by car or matatu (small bus). The small village Ihururu is a typical relict of the colonial settlement policy. A few houses and shops, schools and churches around a market place and a matatu to Nyeri. Guests may be picked up either in Nyeri or Ihururu marketplace.

We want you to feel at home and experience Kenya like you could never do as a mere tourist! Regenerate, explore the Central Highands, get to know the heartland and tradition of the kikuyu.

Here is another Review for our B&B from Andreas and Pernille (2015):
Staying with Mahinda at his place was a tremendous experience. Pernille and I live in Nairobi and despite living in Kenya it was interesting to spend a night in the hills of Nyeri. The location of the place is very beautiful and serene. The cool mountain air was very pleasant and we warmed ourselves and the cozy indoor fireplace. Mahinda had cooked a very nice stew and "Kikuyu" potato mash that filled our stomachs. It was an easy 2.5 hours drive from Nairobi and somewhat easy to find. (website hidden) played teases us so got a boda rider to direct us to Ihururu and Mahinda met us there. We stayed at Mahinda as part of my dad was visited from Denmark (65 years old) and I wanted him to experience a different side of Kenya which was successfully completed with the stay at Mahinda. Another reason for stayed there was to break our drive to Mount Kenya in two.

We enjoyed our stay in Mahinda's house. It was a real Kenyan experience. A lovely country house with a garden in a beautiful surroundings. And of course the highlight of staying there was our acquaintance of Mahinda. He warmly welcomed us, coocked a good traditional food, and it was very interesting to communicate with him. This place is an excellent alternative to expensive lodges or dubious camps near the national parks. Roads around are in good condition and not that busy, so we did two daily trips to Ol Pejeta reserve (1-1,5 hour to drive) and to Samburu (2,5 hours to drive)

I arrived late evening after a day in the Abedares Park but Mahinda was kind enough to meet us in town and show us the way to the shamba. He even made dinner on arrival despite the late time and we had a good chat. In the morning after a lovely breakfast, Mahinda and I walked down to the bottom of the shamba, past the cows and chickens, and down to the the corn, beans and potatoes awaiting harvest. The accommodation is quite basic but I was very comfortable, and despite it being a bit hard to find, that didn't dampen a wonderful experience. I would visit again.

We had a great night staying with Mahinda and enjoyed the opportunity to stay in a Kenyan home rather than just another hotel. He made it really easy to get in touch and find our way, made us feel very much at home and was good company over dinner. It's a beautiful place to stay, peaceful and surrounded by fields. Thanks Mahinda!

We had a great time at Mahinda and Daniel's. Mahinda is a charming host, and we had some fascinating conversations with him about global politics, life in Kenya and the passing of time. The house's setting is beautiful: garden, farm and village are lush and green even at the end of the dry season. There are some nice walks round the village, and it's really close to Aberdares National Park too. We'll definitely be going back.

The host was amazing. We really enjoyed his company, the conversation and not in the least his traditional cooking and watching over the overdue pregnant cow hoping she will deliver during our stay . She did not but we wish her well The farm and surrounding areas are absolute Paradise. We stayed here for two days and it was by far the highlight of our trip so far. We cannot say enough good things about it so if you find yourself in the area, this is a must.

Daniel and Alex have been travelling all over the place.

Mahinda, the host in your Shamba Bed & Breakfast, used to study in Germany and work in Nairobi for many years. After retirement he is taking care of the shamba, tending the cattle and is welcoming guests from all over the world!
