This two-bedroom, two-bath space is part of the Blue Heron, a delightfully peaceful time-share condo resort located on the shores of the breathtaking Hood Canal, near the town of Union, Washington.
Less than 2 hours from Seattle (via Bremerton Ferry and 40 minute drive, or via Tacoma and the Narrows Bridge), the Blue Heron is an ideal getaway in any season, with ample amenities and a cozy Northwest ambiance. It’s also a great home base for exploring the Hood Canal and the Olympic Peninsula.
This spacious unit has a master bedroom on the ground floor and another bedroom upstairs with a full bed and twin bed. Both bedrooms have full baths and televisions with cable. With the queen hide-a-bed in the living room, the entire unit comfortably sleeps six. Bedrooms and bathrooms are stocked with fresh linens and towels.
The living room is fitted with a comfy sofa and easy chairs, a large TV with cable, a DVD player, telephone and fireplace. There are plenty of games, books and jigsaw puzzles in the unit, and the clubhouse has a wide selection of DVDs and video games available for use during your stay.
The kitchen is fully equipped with cookware and plateware, and there is a large dining table, making the unit ideal for dinner parties. In the back is a private patio with a picnic table, and in the front a brand-new deck with views of the Hood Canal.
On the Blue Heron grounds there is a year-round outdoor hot tub, a seasonal outdoor swimming pool and tennis courts. There is also a beautiful clubhouse with pool table, ping pong, foosball, fitness center, television, kitchen library and sauna.
But the biggest attraction is the beach! Just a short walk from the unit, enjoy 400 feet of private waterfront on picturesque Hood Canal, with stunning views of the Olympic Mountains and the heavily wooded hillsides of one of the only true fjords in North America. The Blue Heron’s beach offers great beachcombing and plenty of wildlife watching, from seals to crabs to starfish to, yes, blue herons! Picnic tables and grills are available for outdoor lunches or dinners, and fire pits offer the perfect spot for roasting marshmallows or telling ghost stories around a roaring fire on the beach. There is ample split wood available next to the fire pits.
The beach also provides a bounty of delicious oysters, ready to be picked and shucked, as well as good clam digging. (Note that, as with all Washington State beaches, a harvesting license is required (short-term licenses are available at a local store for a nominal fee) and occasionally there are restrictions in place. Please check with the Blue Heron office for any current shellfish restrictions.)

Both fine and casual dining are available a short walk away at the delightfully quaint Robin Hood Restaurant and Pub, which has live music on weekends and the very popular open-mic live music on Wednesdays (who would think that a pub in such a quiet little corner of the state would be packed on Wednesdays!). Just a short walk further is the upscale restaurant and bar at the Alderbrook Resort & Spa. There is also a nearby deli and a charming Mexican restaurant in the town of Union.
You can also cook at home in the fully decked-out kitchen. Consider picking up some fresh fish at one of the local fish markets, collecting some oysters and clams from the beach and cooking up a feast in the unit. That’s what I do when I’m there!
Wonderful hiking and natural sightseeing is available nearby at Lake Cushman and Staircase, as well as several other great spots along the Canal and in the Olympic National Park, which houses Washington's jaw-dropping temperate rain forests and some of the largest trees in the world. For the more adventurous, there is excellent mushroom foraging to be had in the forests near the resort -- in particular highly prized chanterelle mushrooms.
Local casinos, wineries, antique shops and world class SCUBA diving are all within a half hour's drive. There is plenty to explore on foot as well-- take the waterfront 1/2 mile walk to Harmony Hill for drop-in yoga and a turn in their giant outdoor labyrinth.
I have been coming to the Blue Heron since I was a kid and I’m a huge fan. I love to explore the surrounding area and have extensive knowledge of general environs, so please don’t hesitate to ask me any questions you might have about this special place and what the area has to offer.
Guests have access to the entire unit, as well as the front deck and back patio, and the Blue Heron grounds, which includes the club house, seasonal pool, hot tub, sauna, beach, dock, tennis courts, etc.
