Pension Nostalgia is right next to the free shuttle bus stop - Alpine Chalet. You can catch this bus to at least three of the main resorts - Happo-one; Kakuba47/Goryu; and Iwatake. It is in a quiet area with other guest houses as neighbours. It is walking distance to restaurants and bars and Echoland which is quite lively is an easy 10 minute walk. Yukio and his wife are very helpful and accomodating, they offered to run me to the Supermarket on my first night and they were able to provide discount ski rental/lift passes for each of the resorts I visited. The accomodation has a drying room/vestibule and the bedrooms are upstairs. The bathrooms and toilets are downstairs. The bathroom has a shower and a deep bath which you could use as a mini-Onsen, but I never did. The bed room was quite basically furnished but the bed was incredibly comfy and the quit and cover exceptionally warm. The room was well heated with views to the mountains. The dining room where the excellent breakfast was served was also downstairs. It is possible to sit there in the evenings as well, but it is not a lounge. Overall, I thought the accommodation was very clean and comfortable. There was no frills but the friendliness of the hosts was a very big plus. Price was good. I would stay again, if I was looking for similar budget accommodation, although I did miss not having a large heated Onsen in the evening.
I really enjoyed my stay with Yukio and Toshiko. The place is in a quiet location, yet within easy walking distance to shops and restuarants. The shuttle bus picks for the ski area is right outside the driveway to the house. Inside the house is very clean, warm and good wifi in my room. The hosts Yukio and his wife Toshiko are very friendly and work hard to make your stay enjoyable. Yukio had lots of good recommendations and discount vouchers for various ski resorts and restaurants. The breakfast that Toshiko makes is really delicious. Overall, I really enjoyed my stay and highly recommend staying here.
Super cool place. The hosts are incredibly sweet and helpful, have maps for everything and made a really delicious (and different each day!) breakfast. I was here to ski, and there is shuttle pickup directly outside the door to Happo, Iwatake, etc. There's a hot spring and some great restaurants but a short walk away and a pub just up the street. Will stay here next time I go to Hakuba!
The warm hospitality of Yukio san and his lovely wife made my first visit to ski at Hakuba a true delight. She is an incredible cook, making her Japanese breakfasts to die for. The snow shuttle stops right outside the door and each day Yukio san provided me with discount vouchers for the ski lifts. This made the cost of skiing in Hakuba less than half the cost of skiing in Australia. I took small gifts for the family to thank them for sharing their lovely home, but the eldest son is now studying cosmic rays at University in Tokyo and the younger boy is away at boarding school. I recommend reading up on Japanese customs before your arrival, as you need to respect that you are sharing their home. This is not a western hotel, but provides a rich cultural experience to complement your amazing snow adventure. This was one of my best ever international holidays, so I plan to return next year.
