ARTIST SPACE / One Bedroom / Rustic Aesthetic
Hi there, from time to time I rent out the studio part of my live/work space. In your inquiry message please include the reason for your visit and a little bit about yourself. Also, please read fully the description below before contacting me with questions.
My studio is ideal for anyone with an interest in painting and music and who might be working from the apartment multiple days in a row. I have an extensive record collection that spans jazz to electronic, rock to experimental. Listening to records in the studio is wonderful. My paintings decorate the walls and the space is open. I have a collection of art monographs as well. The main space has a flat screen TV with Netflicks and a DVD player.
Greenpoint has become a destination all its own, with restaurants, coffee shops, and bars everywhere. It's away from the hustle and noise of Manhattan, and has that "secret hideaway" feeling.
There is one bedroom in the studio with a full sized/double bed, but also a large open area that can accommodate an air mattress if you want to add another guest. There is an air conditioner in this room.
I have had guests bring children, but I think it's not ideal for kids, because there is no passenger elevator (only a freight which is off limits to guests) and three flights of stairs up and no place down stairs to leave a stroller. Also, the apartment is not childproof.
Please be discreet and respectful of my neighbors. I want to make sure not to make them feel uncomfortable, so in the very rare chance you happen to engage in any friendly conversation with one of our neighbors while entering or exiting the building, please do not mention that you are staying with me by using AirBnb. It is perfectly ok to say that you are my guests though.
The space was built by art students in the 80's and has an open layout and great view. It has not had a "professional" renovation, and has a casual scrappy quality, as it's used as an active painting studio. Many of the lights are turned on with power strip switches and the heater, while powerful and effective, can be loud sometimes. I have lived here for 13 years. This is an actual functioning artist loft space, not a precious vintage showroom. It is very quiet (no street traffic or neighbors above), comfortable and clean. If you have work to do the apartment is a great place to sit and take care of business. I put together a "Guest Manual" that provides in-depth descriptions of how to make yourself more at home in the space.
The roof has beautiful sunsets and a skyline view, but is a shared area of the building, and so must be treated according. If you go up to the roof, you should hang out above the apartment itself, (next to the fire escape). Garbage and chairs should never be left on the roof, and running and jumping is never allowed, because of the damage it causes the roof and the noise it creates for the neighbors. You should never have more than 2 extra guests on the roof.
Greenpoint is a safe and convenient neighborhood. It has a variety of restaurants, bars and coffee shops. The closest subway stops are the G train (Greenpoint stop) and the 7 train. You can easily transfer to both the E and the L trains making all parts of the city accessible. In the summer you can take a ferry ride into the city, which docks just a few block away. Williamsburg is 15 minutes away walking or by bus.
New York is an exciting city and the apartment is the perfect antidote to that energy, providing a quiet and spacious retreat. Here you can can cook "real" meals-because its a fully equipped kitchen, watch a movie, listen to music, read, or surf the web.
What’s great about the bedroom is that it is very quiet and dark inside. The room has an AC unit so you can rest comfortably in the summer.
My Expectations from a Guest:
Having 2 guests for a small dinner is fine, but no parties or late night activity (past 10pm) (even on the weekends) in the apartment or on the roof, out of respect for my neighbors. If I receive complaints from my neighbors...and they do complain to me, you might be asked to leave early.
No filmmaking or photo shoots of any kind (even small budget) should be taking place in the apartment or on the roof without my prior knowledge and discussion.
Please don't ask me for my personal information for ESTA applications.
No pets in the apartment because of allergies.
No smoking--and that includes with a window open or from the stairwell.
Dishes must always be cleaned within a few hours of use (or you may get bugs and mice). Also, worktable, stove, and sink must be cleaned after every use.
Kitchen utensils such as cast iron pans and cutting knife must be treated accordingly. Cast iron must be dried immediately and please hang up sharp knifes right away, or they will dull.
