Nijo fish Market:
This market, in which the energetic voices of sellers perennially reverberate, is more than 100 years old.
Nijo Market is said to have developed in the early Meiji Period, when fishermen from Ishikari Bay started selling fresh fish there. There used to be a row of fish markets running from Nishi 1-chome to Higashi 2-chome along the bank opposite the Sosei River. Eventually, noodle shops, bars, and greengrocers opened, laying the foundations for today’s Nijo Market. Over a century later, the market continues to serve local residents’ culinary needs. Owing in part to its central location, the market is also popular among tourists, who come in search of Hokkaido souvenirs such as crabs and scallops. There are also mixed-use buildings such as “Noren Yokocho,” which feature many unique eating and drinking establishments and have made Nijo Market a popular spot, alongside Maruyama and Tanukikoji, for gourmands.
Tanukikoji Shopping Arcade:
Tanukikoji is a shopping arcade that has been in operation since the frontier period. It’s a great place to buy Hokkaido souvenirs!
Tanukikoji is an approximately 1km-long arcade with around 200 shops that runs east to west in downtown Sapporo. The roofed arcade starts at Nishi-1-chome and ends at Nishi-7-chome. It can be used regardless of the weather. The arcade was developed during the frontier period. In 1869, when the Meiji government established the Hokkaido Development Commission in Sapporo, merchant houses and restaurants began to pop up in what is known today the Tanukikoji 2 and 3-chome areas. In 1873, the neighborhood became known as “Tanukikoji.” The arcade, which many tourists visit, features both old and new shops, souvenir shops, and karaoke bars. Every walk through the lively arcade offers a new discovery.
