Built by a gold prospector sometime before 1930, the cabin is one of three located on 40 acres 1-½ miles back inside the Pike National Forest. Quiet and secluded, surrounded by wildlife, the cabin was renovated in 1996 and recently updated.

At 8200 feet a few miles north of Woodland Park, summers are warm in the daytime and cool at night. Far from any city lights, the view of the stars at night is amazing. Wildflowers are abundant in the surrounding forest. The Rocky Mountain Bird Observatory counted 25 species of birds on site in one morning in June 2014. Hummingbirds are regular visitors along with chipmunks, rabbits, the resident red fox, the occasional deer and elk in the spring and a black bear in late summer and fall. The cabin's water source is pumped from a stone well fed by a pure mountain spring just above the cabin. The old prospector also operated a still! Electricity is provided by the IREA. Remarkably the cabin roof and ceilings are unique; crafted from (PHONE NUMBER HIDDEN) Colorado license plates!

The old road into the property crosses Trout Creek on an old bridge that is soon to be replaced. It is safe; just proceed cautiously. Four wheel drive is recommended but not necessary during dry weather. There are several trails accessible from the cabin-find the map on the wall inside the dining room!

Общение с гостями

Our neighbor George, 1 ½ miles away on the Forest Road, is familiar with all the cabins systems and is minutes away if there are any problems. The other two cabins are family cabins and will occasionally be occupied for a few days at a time. Verizon coverage is adequate, and other carriers sometimes. Currently no wifi or satellite service in place.
No TV provided.

Другие важные подробности

The USDA Forest Service post fire conditions at several locations between Woodland and the property. Please do not use the fireplace, outdoor fire pit, or outdoor cooker when danger of fire is above moderate. No shooting is allowed in this part of the forest. Off-road vehicles are prohibited.

Great place to disconnect from the world and reconnect with nature and family. Saw an elk and lots of cute critters. Had to remind myself that it's a cabin in the woods- crickets and spiders share the space. Bed is ok for one adult but not two- but other sleeping options (cot, couch) worked well for us. Oven is not working so shop/plan accordingly. (Microwave oven is available.) Still made some incredible meals on the two burners, and the spring water from the tap is *amazing.* We played lots of cards and made lots of crafts while we were there. The ceilings of license plates are beautiful and the place is full of charm. Richard's book is there as well! Thanks so much!

Best family vacation getaway ever! I felt like we were in remote mtns instead of a mere 40 minutes from Manitou Springs area. Cabin is at the end of dead end dirt road, so ZERO other traffic for at least last mile or two. I admit, the modern kitchen (with microwave for unmotivated cooks), flush toilet, and spacious tiled shower were also highly appreciated. There was just enough kitschy charm to make it cozy and inviting. Kids loved watching hummingbirds, chasing and chattering at chipmunks. Plenty of maps and guidebooks for adventurous types. We stuck to hillside nature walks on deer trails, enjoyed the tire swings at larger (empty) cabin next door, and watched shimmering aspens from front porch.

Richard's cabin is exactly as described! It was perfectly situated for our family vacation - in the middle of a beautiful natural setting, but only a few miles from any convenience we needed or wanted. The road up to the cabin was steep, but very manageable in our front wheel drive SUV. Inside, the kitchen was well stocked with appliances and bottled water. I spent many hours on the front porch, watching hummingbirds, relaxing, and reading, while my husband and children explored the trails in the forest that surrounds the cabin. A beautiful, rustic place to stay.

This is what you think of when you think of staying in a cabin in Colorado. The location is perfect. It's secluded , but still only six miles from a major town, for any supplies you may need. The cabin has everything you would need for your stay. The wildlife is incredible and the location close to lakes for fishing, trails for hiking and biking make this the perfect place.

The perfect getaway for peace and quiet. The cabin is rustic and quaint updated with most modern conveniences (no tv, no internet - IDEAL if you are looking to "unplug"). There are 2 other cabins close by but they were unoccupied during most of our stay. Hiked several of the various trails which are just a few steps from the cabin (no driving necessary), with many beautiful views of Pikes Peak and the surrounding area. Got to see lots of wildlife, including a couple of bears, a gray fox, deer, chipmunks, ground squirrels, and several species of birds. The City of Woodland Park is very nearby for anything you may need (groceries, restaurants, drug store, shopping). This is a vacation we would do many times over. Thank you, Richard. Everything was wonderful!
