Une jolie maison accueillante et très propre. Tout était fourni: draps, serviettes, torchons, essuie-tout... Susan et John sont adorables et leur petit chien est tout aussi agréable. Je recommande ce logement.

The hosts seemed preoccupied upon our arrival, which did not set things off on the right foot. Although the house and property have potential, the property outside and surrounding the house is not well kept. Inside was generally clean, but there were cobwebs in the kitchen and on some of the hanging utensils. The kitchen and downstairs bath are rough. The lighting could be improved especially over the dinner table and near the sink in the blue bedroom. Be aware that the hot water tank ONLY re-heats after 1am during the night. This means that if four of you shower in the morning, and then plan to cook and do dishes through the day, you risk not having hot water at night which happened to us. Perhaps the low outside temperatures made things worse. We wanted a place to look forward to upon returning from sightseeing each day - but instead we dreaded it.

OK one thing at a time. We were not preoccupied but were puzzled that the guests didn't understand the way French shops work. They needed to get to the supermarket before it closed. So I tried to cut the "greeting" as short as possible so that they could get in provisions. Most people arrive prepared for this event. Cob webs can appear minutes after they are cleared away. French hot water is heated overnight in most houses over here and this is explained in the folder. We have a very large tank that is sufficient for up to 8 showers - of a standard usage - plus washing up. We have NEVER had a complaint about hot water before in the 5 years we have been trading. I can only put it down to over usage. We ask that guests turn off electric heaters when they go out. This is not just because it is expensive and over usage can result in a bill - which in this case it did not, I may add. It is also wasteful and not good for our environment. Any one who comes here knows the history and none of our many American guests have ever found the fact that the US bombed St Lo offensive. I would also like to point out that this family knew nothing of Bayeux - amazing! They said "they don't get out much" Our gite is described as cosy and rustic - which it is. We do not advertise or pretend that we are luxury, high end or new build. The outside is not developed yet because it is early Spring and not all planting has been done. The building is an old barn - so yes, it looks just as it says on the tin - an old barn - what did they expect? Every body loves coming back to our cosy gite and one family who does not appreciate it will not deter us from carrying on. We have many repeat bookings from educated and intellectual people. So we cant be doing much wrong! I suggest that Peter and his family chose a new hotel for their trips in the future. As country living is obviously not for them. We are dumbfounded by their response. Every other negative comment does not require an answer. There is always one - you can't please everyone :)

Harold's Place is unique and wonderful! It is very peaceful and serene, but close to a small village where you can pick up supplies for meals, etc. We did all of our d-day explorations from here and found it a good location for exploring that area of Normandy. Susan and John were lovely hosts, accommodating us and our small grumpy dog. The house is very unique and comfortable. Would certainly stay again!

Our hosts Susan and John were very hospitable, warm and informative. They made us feel welcome from the moment we arrived. We loved the house and the place. It was so peaceful. Although the house is located in the countryside it does not prevent anyone to visit the great attractions in Normandy.

So the short review is that Sue and John are lovely, welcoming hosts. The gite is snuggly and cozy in a beautiful country village in Normandie. If that's enough for you, head over to Book Now. If you want to know how Sue and John helped save our vacation, keep reading. An airline whose name begins with D and ends with LTA lost not one but both of our suitcases. We spent the first three days of our trip tied to our apartment in Paris waiting for the airline to deliver them. We finally were able to go to Normandie a day late and we had to cram two days of touring into one. We arrived at Sue and John's tired and frazzled. Waiting for us was a bottle of wine, a cheese, a baguette, and most importantly, the TV was was tuned to the BBC channel showing the Euro Cup. We relaxed immediately and enjoyed lovely night. One last thing. If, on your way to Sue and John's you stop at the American Cemetery in Coleville sur Mer, make sure you stop at the cross at Section A, Row 10, marker 9. It is Harold Schillinburg's grave. Since you'll be staying at the farm at which he was killed in action, you'll be glad you spent a moment with him.

Thank you Karen, what a lovely review. We are really touched by your kind words and thoughts of honour for Harold. I only wish you could have stayed longer, we could have raised a glass and enjoyed each others company. We hope the rest of your trip and others that you embark upon are happy and free of drama! Maybe we will see you again one day. Love and peace Sue and John

John and I moved to Normandie in 2008.
We spent the next 4 years renovating our cottage.
After a short break we decided to renovat the barn on our land. The result of which is Harold's Place.
We love the countryside around here. The air is so clear and its so peaceful.
We are very creative and enjoy music, the arts, listening to plays. Driving around France and finding little out of the way places. Going to the Vide Greniers on Sunday morning to seek out a quirky bargain. Dining with friends and enjoying the food and wines of our adopted country
