Built in 1856, this homestead is being given new life as a comfortable retreat house with gardens taking shape on the property. You can "get away" & still be close to unique villages, organic farms, local artists, nature & much more.
The Homestead Retreat & Gardens is my home. While you're here, I stay up the hill with my partner Paul. We have retreat spaces up there that include yoga classes, mindfulness & meditation and a retreat cottage that we listed on airbnb beginning in August. This year we named our gardens Laughing Possum Farm and are part of a local CSA called LEAF. All guests are welcome to let us know if they'd like to come up and stroll the trails around the pond, see our large garden(and take what's in season)or tour Paul's home/retreat - he's a home & furniture builder among other things. You're welcome to come to yoga if you're around in a Tuesday or Friday morning. We'd love to meet you!
You will find the homestead to be a cozy and peaceful retreat. All bookings must be two nights. If you plan to stay more than three nights, you are welcome to ask for a discount. A full week stay is discounted 30% and a month 50%. If you are on your way through and can only stay one night, I will consider your request if it's during the week or off-season. If you need wifi, I am asking people to leave $5/day toward the cost. Not many people use it so in order to keep it I need help with the expense. Thanks for your understanding.
The regular rate per night is $114 on the weekend and during summer and $94 during the week(except in summer). Some simple breakfast items, food from our garden when it's available, access to cooking and art supplies & basic toiletries are included. What a deal! The rate has been increased slightly to cover Union County Hotel Taxes of 5%.
You will find a well-stocked kitchen with a wide variety of utensils, dishes, pots, pans etc., baking supplies, food essentials for cooking (oils, sugar/syrups, pancake mix, rice, spices, dried herbs, coffee, tea, cereal etc.) I buy as organically as possible as well as fair trade whenever possible. The fridge has some basic items, but you will need to purchase fresh goods at the local market or in town.
There is a pantry that holds all of the garden supplies as well as art supplies. You are welcome to use them at no extra cost. Acrylic paint, water colours, collage materials etc. are available. There is also a guitar to play, CD's, books and board games in the closet.
The bathroom has basic amenities including: local soap and lotion, shampoo and conditioner, natural bug bite and repellent, extra toiletries etc. If you forget something and can't find it, let me know.
I keep a variety of items for guests to use around the house such as: jackets, sweaters, shoes, slippers, mitts/gloves, robes - if they fit, you're welcome to them! You will find extra blankets, pillows etc. inside the window bench.
There are two bedrooms, but the main bedroom is where you will stay. It is spacious and has a beautiful view of the back yard and forest, moon and stars. The second bedroom is more like a spare room. Currently there is a futon available in there if needed. I keep some personal items in there, but you can use the CD player, CD's, board games, and books.
The house and gardens are free of pesticides, herbicides, fungicides - any kids of "cides" - basically anything that can kill life. I prefer to keep it that way and hope that if you see a spider, you will use one of the "critter catchers" and take it outside. The house is clean, but sometimes bugs are looking for some creature comforts - if it's rainy or cold especially - I'm sure you can relate :)
You are free to use the entire home and grounds. Please help yourself to whatever you need! There is a trail behind the house that connects with our larger property. You can access the trail depending on the time of year (eg. ticks) and are welcome to have some food from our garden up there as well.
Общение с гостями
I can meet you when you arrive if you would like, or you can arrive on your own and I will let you know where to find the key. I will check in by phone or you can text once your arrive. Your cellphone may work in the house, but you might have to go outside. I will also leave a printed copy of everything you might need to know, in a binder at the house. In the binder, you will also find brochures for local restaurants, shops, sights etc. Call me with any questions or if you're in need of suggestions. I also leave a number for the neighbours in case of something urgent and I'm not answering.
Другие важные подробности
There is a washer and dryer in the home. There isn't a clothesline yet. The water heater is new and can handle showers, washing dishes, etc. no problem. You'll notice that we have low water pressure in the valley but it's enough.
You'll see rain barrels outside that I use to water the gardens. This water is not for drinking. The water from the tap inside the house is good to drink.
There is a septic system(notice the depression in grass in front of porch - don't drive over this please) and lagoon( a favourite place for bunnies and treefrogs). You should not have any problems as it's an efficient system. We follow the "if it's yellow let it mellow and if it's brown flush it down" rule, but you don't have to - just don't put tons of toilet paper or feminine products in the toilet. I thank you in advance.
There is a nice trail up behind the house. Please wear the red hunting jacket if it's deer season just in case. I normally check with anyone who might be hunting to find out when they are out, but best to be cautious.
The Homestead Retreat House & Gardens is meant to be a place of refuge, relaxation, rejuvenation and renewal. This is why there is not T.V. but there are art and cooking supplies and lots of books. If you need access to the internet, let me know and I can leave you a modem. Otherwise, why not disconnect for awhile? You might be able to use your cellphone, but it's hit and miss here in the valley. There is a rotary dial phone for fun, but also a regular phone in the bedroom that you're welcome to use if needed. Calls within the U.S. are free. Calls outside of the country should be placed with a calling card.
I prefer that you don't smoke, but also understand that it's a hard habit to break. Please smoke outside if needed and choose a can or bottle to put butts in. I ask that if you are having drinks, that you do so responsibly and be respectful of the spirit of the place.
There is a binder at the house with instructions for the woodstove, air conditioner and heaters etc. I am sorry, but due to allergies, there are no pets allowed in the retreat house. If you have a chicken with a portable coop, then she is welcome in the gardens :)

I am a spiritual director, retreat facilitator and mindfulness & meditation teacher who loves to travel and also loves to come home. I like to stay in places that are simple and cozy. I am a social person, but also enjoy time alone reading, walking, meditating or being creative. I grow food organically with my partner and love to share our produce with guests at our retreat house. When I travel, I seek out restaurants that support local farmers and I share local places like this with guests at my retreat house. I am curious and love adventure, so appreciate tips on great places to visit, eat or explore. Having been hosted by many others in my life, I have loved offering the Homestead Retreat & Gardens for others to enjoy. My hope is that this house will be a peaceful place to stay and that even if you just showed up with a toothbrush, you would have all that you need! In August of this year, we added Eva's Roost Retreat to our Airbnb listings. This sweet zen-style cottage has large windows overlooking the pond and forest & is a quiet & private space to retreat for one or two people. We are beginning our third year of being listed on Airbnb and loving every minute. We look forward to welcoming you.
