Open plan loft space is a great hideaway for work, rest or play. Ideal for quiet guests that don't need a conventional door and comfortable with stairs. Great light and spacious enough to accommodate 2 parents and a child on occasion.
***Please note this room has special considerations.***
The ROOM - Playroom
The Playroom (so called because we watched TV, read books and lounged before our TV went kaput) is in the fully renovated attic space. It is on the third level, accessed by ladder-type steps (steepish, so if you have limited mobility or vertigo, this is not the best option for you. It has a wide, open floor plan with a window that faces the front, a skylight and a small one that faces the rear.
SPECIAL CONSIDERATION: This is an attic space and has steps that go up and wrap around for privacy, but it does NOT have a traditional door. Thus it is important that occupants feels comfortable with that and the natural outcome of needing to not be too loud after quiet hours, does not need to be up in the middle of the night or talking loudly on cell phone at odd hours, which we have had before so we are sensitive to. It is also above several rooms in the home so heavy walking would also be a challenge.
We are an active household so you don't have to be a mouse at all, but sound does travel differently without a door. That said, people have been perfectly content with it as it is large and spacious.
And because we store some extra sheets and blankets in this space, we may have to ask to come up quickly to access the closet. Though we try to avoid that, it can happen.
We invite you to consider our other listings if this doesn't work for you.

We are an eco-friendly, queer-friendly, class-conscious, health-conscious, vegetarian/pescatarian (fish & eggs welcome) household. We actively engage in reducing our carbon footprint on the earth by lessening our dependence on fossil fuels; eating and food shopping for what is local, organic, and in season; composting, recycling, being mindful of our energy and water consumption, and reducing our overall use of plastic.
The residence is a large seven bedroom, two-story Edwardian, centrally located in South Berkeley.

•Easy, safe on-street parking
•10 minute walk from Ashby BART
•15 minute walk to Downtown Berkley
•Multiple bus lines
•Proximity to Oakland/Berkeley border
•Set back 15 feet from street behind red, decorative gate
Our sizable property is fenced with bamboo and contains a meditation garden and in-progress pond. The overall space has a peaceful, yet communal feel with the meditation garden open to the public and our practice community at specified times during the week. The property features:
•Small outside patio area
•Gently landscaped Zen-style serene garden w/ sitting areas surrounded by black and green bamboo, maples and evergreens
We also have a beautiful free-standing Practice Hall that is located to the rear of the main residence. This architectural treasure is a traditional Korean-designed practice space. We hold regularly scheduled community practice there, and the hall is rented out for events periodically. It has a separate path for entrance and visitors do not disturb the household, though may come in the kitchen briefly for access to water. All public events are complete by 9:30pm.
We host meditation, yoga and embodied leadership practices on Thursday evenings and Friday mornings. Guests are most welcome to join us for these sessions.
All residents live on the second floor of the home. We are the home base of the newDharma community, and we each work for Transformative Change (XC), a nonprofit organization that is run from this location. To learn more about XC, please read the Profile section.
Our current residential members are 2 women of color, 2 men, 1 cat, and 1 African Grey parrot. XC Founder and newDharma Community Spiritual Director, Rev. angel Kyodo williams is a resident and serves the organization as Vision Fellow. (pictures in profile)
In addition, any one of 1-2 additional community/staff members are often on the premises, particularly during the weekdays. We are a warm, welcoming, easy-going group of folks that are comfortable going about our lives as you go about yours.
We are practice-based community and have a few practices that you should be aware of:
Mondays: We observe social silence and ask that personal conversations happen in personal spaces or outside of the house. This gives our residents time to be more reflective each week.
Thursday evenings: We host a traditional zen ceremony in the Practice Hall.
We sound a "moktak" (wooden block sound) at 6:30pm and 6:40pm to signal meditation beginning on this evening.
Friday mornings: We have a 5:40am wake-up bell (small chime sound) for our early morning yoga practice that rings through the house. You are, of course, welcome to stay asleep and may even not hear it. We also sound the "moktak" at 5:55am to signal the beginning of meditation and yoga. And the "moktak" is sounded a final time to call residents to work practice (cleaning property & grounds) at 7:45am.
If you are particularly sleep-sensitive and these "temple" sounds would be disruptive for you, our place is likely NOT the best choice for you.
In addition to full access to the kitchen and the basics of pots, pans, dishes, we share an extensive supply of spices, condiments and cooking oils. Who wants to buy a bottle of oil, pepper or salt for 4 days, right? We also have brown rice in the cooker during the weekdays. Weekends, everyone is on their own. We also have a safe, comfortable, unobtrusive (read: not pretty) bike with safety lights that we can make available to guests on a first come, first serve basis to help you get around.
•Wifi internet access (business class speed)
•Laundry with commercial quality washer/dryer and scent free detergent. (Not available on Mondays)
•Full kitchen access
•Complimentary coffee & nice variety tea
•Filtered water & hot water boiler for always available hot water.
•Use of wide array of basic condiments, oils and spices
•Brown rice often available in rice cooker
•Apple Computer available for use if needed (screen is a bit janky)
•Fax Machine & Copier for basic use
We have personal cabinets and food items that are marked with individual names that aren't for guest use, as well as a few high-end appliances.
Общение с гостями
We are an easy bunch that is accustomed to going on about our days without a lot of interaction, though we are happy to answer questions that arise. We orient guests so they can be as self-sufficient as possible and leave guests to come and go as they please. Different people in the home have different personalities so conversation may strike up organically, but mostly we all fluidly navigate around each other with an easy-going, each-to-her-own style.
Другие важные подробности
We ask that all inquiries have a photo included in your profile of anyone that intends to stay. We are a community and like to know who we will share with. Also, please do READ the House Rules. If you acknowledge you have read them and agree when you inquire, we can accept your request much faster. Thank you, safe travels and good luck!
Smoking is not allowed on the grounds. Guests who smoke may do so outside the gate. Also, due to fire hazards, we unfortunately cannot permit burning of candles in the rooms by guests. We run a nonprofit organization in addition to being a community. As such, not-yet-legal drugs are strictly prohibited anywhere on the premises, including in your room, luggage, on your person.
We are shoeless household. Outdoor shoes must stay outside (or carried into your room.) You are welcome to wear socks, house slippers of your own, or borrow a pair here for your stay.
We maintain a pescatarian household. There is NO chicken, beef or pork allowed in the house. Seafood and fish are welcome. We ask that you eat meat in another location or in the garden or other part of the grounds.
4. MAKE-UP & STRIP-DOWN
We're a home first. To make AirBnB possible when we have extra space, and to keep costs reasonable, we make sure the room is clean and provide fresh linens and towels. You make up your own bed when you arrive, and strip it down when you leave. You'll also do a basic sweep and empty your trash.
5. IF IT'S YELLOW...
We are sensitive to the environment and over-consumption. In an effort to reduce water use, we use an external bin for yellow paper (urine) in all bathrooms. This significantly reduces flushing and excessive water waste.
6. NO TRACES
Everyone is asked to clean up after themselves. This includes throwing things away in the proper receptacles and washing, drying and putting away dishes. Enjoy yourself and be comfortable, But when you leave a public space, it should be like you were never there.
7. TOUR WITH US
All guests must have an Orientation Tour. It takes about 15 minutes and is required to stay. It helps make sure you have critical information and that you'll make your way around the house well.
8. ONLY YOU
If you confirm for one person, please be one person. We don't mind our guests having periodic guests, but no de facto live-ins. We like to meet outside folks when possible. If we confirm your booking as two guests, all good.
9. PICTURE THAT
We'll make a photo copy of your legal ID when you arrive, for your safety and ours. We will also confirm your cell phone number and email.
10. SIGN OFF
We ask that you sign off on a few things so that we know we're on the same page:
- the house rules
- the room condition
- the orientation tour
Sorry, WE NO LONGER ALLOW people to rent on anyone else's behalf. If you're the one staying, you have to be the one renting. No parents renting for children--even college-aged.

Transformative Change (XC) is a nonprofit that is dedicated to naming, framing, advancing and promoting Transformative Social Change: work at the intersection of personal inner awareness, organizational effectiveness and broad-based social change. We are the first and only national center entirely dedicated to bridging the inner and outer lives of social change agents, activists and allies to create a more effective, more sustainable social justice movement. By directly impacting the culture of movements for social justice, we are "changing the WAY change is done."
As a "transformative practice organization" we are a unique hybrid of residentially-based "Core" members who Live, Work and Practice together. As the organizational Core, we are committed to role-modeling and articulating the process of deep change. We operate under an abiding principle that it is possible for a small team of creative, grounded individuals, working collaboratively, at the center of and within the larger field of Transformative Social Change, to effectively change the world.
