Come enjoy the stunning ocean, forest, and mountain views from this craftsman-built west coast retreat, “The Family Manor”. Located on the sunny west shores of Lasqueti Island. The Family Manor is a beautiful, bright, open-plan three bedroom house situated on 14 private acres. Comfortably accommodating up to six people, The Family Manor offers three fenced acres of park-like grounds full of berries, fruit orchards, and open fields – perfect for afternoons grazing and outdoor play. The remaining 11 acres are forested and offer beautiful walking.
Despite being completely off-grid, The Family Manor offers all the comforts of home. A comprehensive solar power system, solar hot water and a spring-fed dam allow for a generous five piece bathroom and a full gourmet kitchen. Every room of the house offers gorgeous views of forest, orchards, ocean and mountains. The living spaces are open and fabulous for a quiet couples retreat, or for fun filled family getaways.

Pricing:
$175 per night, minimum two night stay or $1000 per week (7 nights)

Facilities:
Solar powered (conscious energy system), spring fed pond, 3 cleared acres, solar hot water, septic system, propane stove and oven, internet and music, possible small bar fridge available otherwise cool/pantry built into house; access ramp; some cell phone reception. Keep in mind this is off the grid living and although the house is set up with all the amenities of a comfortable home you will need to be conscientious of your power usage.

Please Note: There are 2 other dwellings on the 14 acres, one is occupied by a family member of the property owner and the other to a small family - your privacy is completely respected at all times.

Sleeping:
There are three upstairs bedrooms and a den. The master room has ocean views with a queen bed. The second large room has views over the clearing and garden with a double bed. The third bedroom has a double bed with tree top views. The downstairs den has a sofa hide-a-bed with ocean views.

Activities:
The deck has patio furniture and there are board games and books in the house. Water activities available on the island include sailing and fishing charters. The closest swimming beach is mud bay near where the ferry docks. It is a sandy beach that is ideal at high tide and great for kids! This beach access is approximately a 45 minute walk from the family manor.

Getting Here:
The passenger ferry from French Creek to False Bay is walk on only. It is recommended that you arrive 30 minutes prior to scheduled departures. Boarding passes will be put out on expected busy sailings and long weekends. For boarding passes to be valid you must be on the ferry with all of your gear ready to go and your vehicle parked, 15 minutes before the scheduled departure time. (The ferry may depart 15 minutes prior to scheduled sailing times if capacity is met) Passes can be found in a yellow box on a post next to ferry landing and are put out when the previous sailing departs. For example, boarding passes for the the 5:30 sailing (leaving French creek) will be put out at 2:30.

Reminder you may require passes to get off the island during expected busy sailings and long weekends. During summer months, departures from French creek on Fridays and Saturdays are often crowded or overloaded, as well as Departures from False bay on Sundays. Please be considerate of other passengers transporting freight on and off of the ferry and try not to loiter in busy loading areas. Thank-you!

Getting Around:
Nice dirt roads for leisurely walking. The house is about a 45 minute walk from False Bay or a 10 minute drive. There is no bike rental service on the island but you can BYO bike on the passenger ferry. Pre- arranged taxi service available please call (PHONE NUMBER HIDDEN). It is recommended that you book well in advance for transportation needs during your stay. Ideally upon booking so that travel plans runs smoothly.

Restaurants and Food:
We recommend you bring all food and supplies that you will require during your stay with you.

You can also visit:
Provisions bakery and general store or Lasqueti restaurant & pub

In the Area:
If you are here on a Saturday, be sure to check out the Lasqueti Farmers and Craftsman’s market June 20 - Sept 12 from 11-1pm which offers fresh produce, artisan breads, coffee, doughnuts and much more! Everything made locally on the island.

Children:
Please be aware that there is one unfenced pond in the 3 acres of clearing behind the house. Supervision is required for young children.

Really warm welcome from Nicole when we arrived on the ferry! She parked her SUV really close and even helped us with our gear. Beautiful setting and comfortable house. Really great kitchen, amazing views in every direction as we cooked. We were 2 couples, a 3-year-old, and a baby. The house felt very spacious for us, although the walls of the bedrooms on the second floor don't extend completely to the ceilings, they're open, and this lets some noise (snoring!) and light in. Bring ear plugs. We also brought blackout curtains for the baby's room and a sound machine, but Nicole later said we're not supposed to have things running at night, and we lost power on the third night. It was switched back on in the morning. The solar power really makes you aware of your energy usage. (Even phone chargers need to be unplugged when not in use.) There were lots of wasps on the deck so we weren't able to eat dinner out there but spent lots of time out there star-gazing after dark, which was really spectacular. We gorged ourselves on blackberries, plums and apples growing in the yard. There is a trail down to the ocean through the back gate. It was a good trip but we probably wouldn't go again because of the transportation situation. It felt a bit isolating at the house with no vehicle. The taxi (Nadine) charges $40 for the 10-min drive from the ferry, so it's not cheap. We walked into "town" (the ferry dock) which took an hour (with two kids!) and got REALLY LUCKY that we met some very friendly locals at the parade who offered to drive us back (Darren & Nicki from Tucker Bay!) and then they arranged to come back the next day to drive us to the ferry with all our stuff when we were leaving, but first they went to the ferry to get us boarding passes 2 hours before it departed, and stood in line for 40 mins to get them, and then came to get us and even gave us a small tour of the island before dropping us off... just amazing generosity, they were our guardian angels! They said the False Bay ferry in the summers on Sundays is so busy that many people often don't get on, and have to wait hours for the next one, and the operators don't do extra runs even if there's overflow. And the ferry we took left 15 mins early, just because it was full... so there's not a lot of rhyme or reason to it... there's no standard time when the passes are put out, you just have to go "early" and hope. I'm sure these are "charming idiosyncrasies" for Lasquetians, but for visitors trying to coordinate many unknowns of travel, it actually made our weekend getaway quite stressful. Thank god for Darren & Nicki, such great people!!

Thanks for the feedback. We have made changes to our listing to include more information about transportation, the ferry, and the off grid power system. We were saddened to hear that you found the weekend stressful, and will continue to make changes to our listing to add as much detail about the trip as possible. Living off grid is not for everyone. Although having walls that allow warm air from the wood stove to circulate evenly trough the house makes great sense for heating and cooling, it also allows for more sound to travel around as well. Solar powered energy systems give us lots of power through the summer, however at night there is no power coming in to the system and we rely on the limited amount of power stored in the batteries. For visitors to the island the lack of transportation can definitely pose a challenge. Those who can bring bikes, hitchhike, or use the taxi service. Although $40 may seem expensive, it takes 20 minutes for the driver to drive to guests, pick them up, drive them to the ferry and drop them off, then drive home. In total it takes around 1 1/2 to 2 hours, and the price of gas on Lasqueti is double the price that it is on Vancouver Island or the Mainland. These are all aspects that make life on Lasqueti different and special, but also challenging and frustrating at times. I should note that the gate and trail at the back of the yard go through the neighbours private property, and is not available for use by guests. We will be sure to put up a sign to let future guest know. Thanks again for the feedback, and for staying with us.

The Family Manor was very comfortable and calm. It's a perfect, off-the-grid house, while still keep some nice amenities.

Angus' place is secluded and comfortable. It felt spacious for our family of five. It also felt like home. We spent most of our time looking out over the water and even saw some whales! I would recommend bringing a bike if you want to get around. It is a 45 min walk to False Bay. I hope to return in the future.

I have lived on Lasqueti Island for well over 30 years. It is a fun, funky community and I love living here. I am a builder and have build dozens of homes here on Lasqueti over the years, including my own. I spend my summers sailing up the coast, and would love for you to come to Lasqueti to enjoy the community and scenery while staying at my house, Bad Manor. I look forward to your call!
