The benefits of staying at the Milkweed Mercantile instead of less-expensive accommodations at Dancing Rabbit are many. Most importantly: this is what we do. The Mercantile was designed for YOUR comfort. Rooms and showers are spotless, the linens are clean and feel great, breakfast is included, and we (the owners of the Mercantile and long-time members of Dancing Rabbit) are on-hand to answer any questions you may have.
Thick undulating strawbale walls provide tremendous insulation, providing warmth in the winter and helping to cool the building in the summer. Water is (filtered) rainwater, food is local and organic.
Wifi included in rate. There are no phones or TVs in the rooms. We (delightfully) get poor cell phone reception. This is a place for peaceful relaxation, conversation and make-your-own entertainment.
Our goal: to demonstrate that sustainability isn't about deprivation but about comfort, joy and living just a bit more lightly upon the Earth. Plus, we love what we do and enjoy pampering our guests - see our reviews on (website hidden) and (website hidden).
The entire Mercantile can be rented for events (special birthday, receptions, etc.); rates include custom meals by our chef, room for 10 overnight guests, dining room for 20.
PROFESSIONAL MUSICIANS please note: We love to host traveling musicians on Tuesdays or Wednesdays, and happily barter a meal and a place to sleep in exchange for a house concert. Please call for more info.
Guest lounge and screened-in wraparound porch at all hours. Dining room and store 4:00 - 6:00 p.m. Friday-Sunday. Pizza and beer every Thursday 4:00 - 9:00 p.m.

Originally from the San Francisco Bay Area, I've happily made my home in rural Northeast Missouri at Dancing Rabbit Ecovillage since 1999 (no one is more surprised than I!). My husband Kurt Kessner and I built our strawbale home in , and in 2007 decided to build an Inn to encourage and enable others to experience a sustainable life firsthand. We designed and built the Mercantile ourselves (with the help of friends) of recycled and/or renewable materials. Life is busy but good - star-filled skies, flower-filled prairies and friend-filled days make Dancing Rabbit a very special place indeed. We hope you come visit!
On a more personal note: I've never met a book I didn't like; my overflowing collection is housed - and for sale - in the Mercantile. Our Inn is dog-friendly because we adore dogs. I take great delight in feeding people, and especially love to bake. I love singing and figuring out harmonies with friends.
