First the good. The apartment is centrally located and has a parking space. This makes it incredibly convenient to get anywhere you want on the island if you rent a car. The apartment also comes equipped with beach towels, beach mats, beach chairs, an umbrella, boogie boards, a cooler, and a few other amenities that make a day at the beach all the more fun and worry free.
The host, Daniel, was there to receive us and was nice enough to leave us a gift basket. He had a lot of very useful suggestions about places to eat and beaches to visit.
Now the bad. The apartment has a serious cockroach (and other pests, eg ants, gnats, lizards, case bearers) problem. We saw multiple roaches (alive/dead, small/large, scurriers/fliers) from the day we arrived until the day we left. We were motivated to bring up the issue with Daniel when a large flying cockroach flew into our bed the second night. To Daniel's credit, the day we told him of the issue he fogged the apartment. This helped initially, but over the next few days the problem gradually returned until it was bad as it ever was.
We recognize that pest control can be a challenge, and that some other guests may not be bothered by the thought of roaches, but we were very surprised that no reviews up until this point mentioned the pest problem. Our biggest disappointment was that we felt misled by Airbnb and its community-- that we weren't given enough information about the rental to make an informed decision. For Daniel's sake, we hope he proactively abates the pests so that future guests don't share our experience.
We really struggled with whether or not to post this review because we mean no harm by Daniel; but ultimately, we felt we would be doing a disservice to other Airbnb-ers by hiding this information. The ratings and reviews cannot be trusted if people cannot be honest.
