We came for the day version of the Seagull / Seafarer overnight camps, and found Terry's "Journey's End" cottage proximity to the camps ideal, not to mention the breathtaking views.
Upon arrival, one could immediately tell that the cottage was much loved. It had a lot of character and history.
The cottage sits on the top of the two-tiered bank, and enjoys the sweeping view of the river. You can easily walk to the dock, but the best part was the airy breeze on the top of the hill, right outside the back porch door. On the hottest, muggiest day, when even by the water the air felt stiff and sweaty, on the top, the breeze off of the river lifted you up, giving you a feeling birds must experience every day.
We all enjoyed having dinners on the back "sleeping" porch, and reading in the comfy arm chair. The kids loved the two twin beds, falling asleep to the sound of rain on the tin roof. The "inside" shower was newly added, very stylish and comfortable. The "outside" shower was a lot of fun -- hot water, blue open sky with tickling sun above your head, sound of seagulls, and, once you are done, the ever-present gentle breeze greeting you and drying your hair, as you'd walk to the back entrance.
We kayaked (Terry provided three kayaks with paddles and life vests) -- the men in the family used the tandem kayak to take the smaller kids out on the water. We bought fresh shrimp from Endurance Seafood in Oriental, NC -- yum! The best part, however, was the excitement for kids and adults alike, catching our own (seven!) blue crabs, using discarded shrimp heads as bait in the three crabbing cages Terry had at the cottage.
All of us found fossilized shark teeth along the banks of Neuse. We saw dolphins. Free 20 min ferry ride with feeding seagulls was a hit, and beautiful fireworks at camp Seagull were fun. We travelled much exploring surrounding area (Cape Lookout with ferry and beach ride to the point was our favorite), but always felt that Terry's cottage and the big-open space-river back yard among shady trees were the best place to come home to.
Terry, thank you so much for sharing your wonderful home with us. It was one of our best trips. The kids gave Seagull/Seafarer 11 out of 10 possible. We hope to be back.
