Typical stone-wood made Skyrian traditional house in the heart of the old town, next to the acropolis and Byzantine castle/monastery. Not far from cafes-shops, it has internet, parking 200m away, nice yard, great views 20m away and very quiet...

It's an incredibly authentic experience, the place is nice, simple and traditional. The location is very special, you are essentially staying on the peak of the island and the most amazing view is right around the corner. This is one of the most unique places to stay on Skyros. Tryfon was a great host, organised transport to and from the airport for us and was always available if we needed anything. We had an amazing stay and would highly recommend it to anyone interested in a quiet, traditional Greek island experience.

My sister and booked a two week stay at Castle House and decided to leave early. The house was about a ten minute walk up the hill from the taxi drop-off point and up quite a steep and narrow path. If you’re met and assisted with your cases that would be a great help. Unfortunately our host texted us the day before our arrival to say he wouldn’t be on the island when we arrived. His mother, who met us, wasn’t able to help us but showed us the way. The house was quite dark inside (we couldn’t read the wi-fi password on the bottom of the router without using the torch on our mobile phones) and smelled a bit musty in places. The kitchen cupboards contained random bits and pieces and lacked items such as stirring spoons, a normal sized chopping board, an all-purpose chef’s knife etc. The bathroom only had the light from the shaver socket above the hand-basin and this cast a yellowish glow; I think we all appreciate a brightly lit bathroom. Also the water in the shower drained very slow and so we’d be standing in the waste water. There was no dressing table mirror in the bedroom and the mirror in the wardrobe wasn’t full length. The TV didn’t work. The host apologized, said it needed connecting and arranged for it to be fixed the next day. The kitchen flooded caused by a leaking faucet that wasn’t obvious. There were too many feral cats on the property even for us animal lovers – up to a dozen at a time – which meant we couldn’t sit outside at the only table (inside there was only a breakfast bar). The host’s mother apologized for encouraging the cats by feeding them. The cats tried, and succeeded, getting into the house by any means to steal food. We couldn’t open the windows for ventilation as they’d torn through the mosquito netting on two windows to get in. They would stand on the window ledge and claw at the netting and meow to get in. We felt the property would benefit with some maintenance work, a deep clean and perhaps a coat of paint. It seemed to be a sort of depository for unwanted things (especially in the kitchen cupboards. A welcome pack giving information about, for example, where to leave the rubbish, useful numbers, etc. would have been handy. We did appreciate that the host responded to our emails and texts quickly. We liked the position of the house; it was next to a monastery and a very short walk to some seats that overlooked beautiful scenery especially of the sea. The neighbours were friendly and helpful especially the lovely lady two doors away. We enjoyed exploring the little town and walking up and down the picturesque paths.

It wouldn’t be an exaggeration to say that this house is the best place to stay in the whole Skyros. First of all – it is on the very top of the mountain, just below the castle, so you’ll have a stunning view just a few steps away from your house. (Moonlight, some greek wine and you watching the night sea on the top of the mountain… just imagine how romantic :)) And don’t be afraid about the access: there is a road that goes up the mountain so you can park your car not far from the house. And if you like, you can have a pleasant walk down from your house through the charming village following the stone-paved steps. As for the accommodation itself – we felt absolutely like at home, the house had everything to make us comfortable: fully equipped kitchen, big bed, extra blankets and pillows, air conditioning (though you most likely won’t need it, inside the house it is quite fresh in summer), washing machine, iron, hairdryer, big TV set (but who needs TV when you have the whole Skyros at your feet!), good shower. Everything is absolutely clean. The nearest beach is the best beach in Skyros: very long, sandy, the water is crystal clear. In front of the house there is a tiny square, that is actually only used by you and several greek cats (who would be happy if you give something tasty to them, but are shy and won’t bother you if you don’t want to make friends). There are cafes and restaurants down in the village, 2 supermarkets and several fruit shops, bank and post office, pharmacies. Tryfon was very hospitable; he has done everything to make our stay comfortable and unforgettable. He was always available for help. Special thanks to his grandma who was very kind to us! I have a feeling that this is not our last trip to Skyros, the island has enchanted us! Thanks, Tryfon, I hope we’ll see each other again!

Dear guests, I am an academic, university lecturer, educated in anthropology and I have been also working in my family real estate business the last 10 years. I speak English and Greek and I will try to give you an enchanted perspective of the island once you are here. I will try to make you feel at home as I am also a good traveller and I know what it takes to get to a new country for vacation or work...But I will also let you enjoy fully your stay and I will be threre for anything you need.

This is the island where Giorgos Seferis spend his vacation: "I don’t know much about houses, i remember their joy and their sorrow, sometimes, when I stop to think" (Thrush). It is also the island where English poet Rupert Brooke passed away and was buried: "Wind, sun, and earth remain, the birds sing still, When we are old, are old. . . ." "And when we die. All's over that is ours; and life burns on, Through other lovers, other lips," said I,-- "Heart of my heart, our heaven is now, is won!" (The Hill).

Skyros is the only island in the Aegean sea with a square dedicated to eternal poetry, which locals call Brooke square. The old town with its numerous Byzantine chapels, noble castle houses and little streets facing the East sea is so unique, it will take your breath away.

Throughout my work on the island, I have seen hundreds of houses that people rent or sell and I have made a conscious selection of renting some of the best properties available. My criteria are based on the location of each property, the view, the architecture and the style, the comfort and finally the neighborhood. The properties are located in the old town as I believe Skyros with its cultural and easthetical forms is materialized in "Hora", the village, where 80% of the inhabitants of the island live and where most of the shops and restaurants are located. If you want to feel the rhythm of the island, its slow pace under the shadow of the hot summer sun, the Skyrian neighborhood life that unfolds in the open with the old women who greet you as you walk up towards your rental and the sun burned faces of shepherds who wont bother to talk to you unless you stay on the island for years, this is the place to spend your vacations. Once you stay in Hora and especially in the old town facing the East where each morning the horizon transforms into a miracle of colors accross the horizon and the deep blue sea, you will be mesmerized and you will feel why for thousands of years people have been living in the exact same location. The top of the rock of Skyros...
