We like to think of ourselves as easy going and informal hosts. As Arabaer is not only a working farm, but our home, it is likely there will be someone onsite at all times to help deal with any enquiries you may have during your stay.
We are a horse farm primarily breeding, training and selling Icelandic horses, and we happily invite you to meet these beautiful creatures throughout your stay with us.
There are a mixture of family and workers here, often of varying nationalities, and we are happy to chat with guests and offer advice on places to visit, eat, shop and so forth over a coffee.
As the holiday house is self-contained with a fully fitted kitchen it is also ideal for holidaymakers who are a little more independent and would prefer to keep to themselves, we welcome all types of guests!
Arabaer is ideally situated to experience an authentic , rural working Icelandic horse farm whilst still maintaining relative ease of access to the amenities of the nearest big town Selfoss (The largest town in South Iceland) only 26km away.
To the back of the property we have access through our land to the River þjórsá, and we are spoiled year round by breath-taking sunrises and sunsets. Views from outside the house take in some beautiful vistas with the mountain Ingólfsfjall, and volcano Hekla, in the distance. On a clear day Eyjafjallajokull (The ash cloud causing volcano) can be sighted from the back garden. You may also witness the majestic northern lights whilst staying at the house.
Many activities can be enjoyed onsite or in the surroundings including, horse-riding, fishing and hiking.
Arabaer is situated approximately 120km from Keflavik International Airport. We are easily accessible by road from the airport, with two main routes to us, and we are more than happy to help provide directions of how to get to us. There are not too many complicated road systems in Iceland so finding us should prove no problem!
The nearest public transport, bus, can bring you in to Selfoss (26km away). It is most likely though you will be travelling to us by hire car. During winter, as with most of Iceland, there can be quite a lot of snow around so if you plan to visit us at this time of year we suggest hiring a 4WD or car with good winter tires.
Once here there is plenty of parking available on the property.

Hi, I live here at Arabaer with my husband Saevar and our four young children. Arabaer is a busy working farm where we train, breed and sell Icelandic horses. We also farm vegetables including turnips and carrots, this keeps us all busy! I am originally from Scotland and have travelled, lived and worked abroad in several places including New Zealand and Holland before settling in Iceland around 9 years ago. My husband Saevar is Icelandic and grew up around here, we run the business together and enjoy our busy lifestyle with the farm, children, and various pets ;-)
We speak English and Icelandic here on the farm.
