Welcome to a unique off-grid ‘onboard’ experience in an off-the-beaten-track location; a remote retreat for star-gazers, wild-swimmers and the adventurous at heart.

'Shelduck' is a vintage, 1970’s sailing yacht, moored in a secluded lagoon, accessible only by water or mile-long hike along Hurst Spit.

Cosy, clean @ comfy, but no frills, you will literally be off-grid, with the sea between you and the mainland; just you and the great outdoors.

Жилье
Shelduck is a 1970’s-built sailing boat. A grand old lady; a bit creaky, but well preserved and with lots of good years left in her!

She is a compact 27ft long and 9ft wide, so bear in mind that your floating accommodation spaces are naturally smaller than the equivalent in a house ashore. Think, floating caravan!

Below deck you will find a charming saloon and galley, a compact double forepeak cabin, two 'aft' single cupboard cabins and a small separate ‘heads’ – sea loo. The sleeping accommodation, whilst snug, is very flexible, and suits couples or friends or small families that like each other:-)

(more info on bed dimensions below)

The saloon has a cosy L shaped sofa, perfect for curling up and reading a book. Shelduck is ideal for switching off from the outside world and she comes complete with a pack of cards, Scrabble, and pair of binoculars for spotting the plentiful bird and sea life.

Up on deck there is plenty of room to spread out and sunbathe, and there is ample cushioned seating in the cockpit to enjoy supper at sunset. There is also a sun/shower canopy.

Shelduck doesn’t fit the typical definition of hotel luxe but we think that luxury isn’t just about thread count and room service. It can be the sizzle and smell of frying bacon whilst watching the sun poke its head over the horizon. A peaceful paddle through the creeks at dusk; a bracing wild swim; a quiet game of Scrabble and the sound of nothing but lapping waves at your window gently lulling you to sleep. Luxury is imbued by this special location and the memorable moments you will spend here.

With more than a touch of the Swallows and Amazons about it, you’ll experience back to basics, simple living in a spectacular location accessible only by water - Shelduck is equipped with the essentials for a truly off-grid experience; warm bedding, cold running water, sea loo, a kettle, and a cooking plate. The sea will be your bath and a beachside BBQ will be your supper.

Shelduck is by no means a sleek princess; think quirky and characterful older lady! She is a repurposed and basic, lady of 'a certain age', resplendent with all the dinks and scratches you'd expect from 45+ years on the waves. But we think her imperfections are more than amply compensated by her many charms!!

Everything on board is more than a smidge smaller than at home, sleeping quarters included! The boat facilities are 100% solar powered and designed for basic, off-grid living. There is no hot running water and no indoor shower. But you will find everything essential you need on board for a rejuvenating off-grid, short wilderness stay.

What’s included

- Warm bedding, pillows and towels
- A simple breakfast hamper (traditional porridge)
- A supply of cold running water for cooking/washing
- A 5 ltr bottle of drinking water
- Ration pack: tea, coffee, milk, sugar
- A kettle and a cool box (we will even load your cool box with freezer blocks for your arrival - nobody likes warm wine!)
- Crockery, cutlery and cooking utensils
- A double cooking plate
- A solar powered 12v solar battery package to power your essential lighting and cooking. (Once it’s gone it's gone, so use it wisely!)
- Tide times and river map
- Keys for your private off-boat loo and solar powered shower
- Binoculars
- A selection of games and books
- Picnic bench on your pontoon

Included in your booking package as a very special extra, is a visitor pass to island fortress, Hurst Castle~, which sits a few hundred yards away from your boat. Visit and enjoy this wonderful national heritage property during opening hours. As well as being a unique historic visitor attraction, boasting 16th century dungeons and gun ramparts, there is also a wonderful castle café on site and acres of beautiful seafront picnic spots to enjoy. ~Please see Hurst Castle web pages for further information about availability and opening hours of this attraction.

Feel free to bring your own, or hire kayaks and paddle boards with which to explore the lagoon and extensive creeks that connect you with the mainland*. Literally out in the wilds, you won’t be much troubled by hoards of people, traffic or light pollution. Happy days!!

What’s not included
 Running hot water
 Mains electricity
 Traditional shower facilities**
 Meals other than breakfast***

* Just let us know before you arrive that you will be bringing kayaks or SUPS - we can arrange to take your luggage to your boat for you when you arrive whilst you enjoy a paddle down to the boat under your own steam. If you want to hire locally, just ask us to advise.

**In true off-grid style, showers and baths are either taken in the sea, in the outdoor solar shower, or else the old fashioned way with a boiled kettle and a flannel.

***Milford on Sea is renowned for its foodie credentials. Why not ask us to hook you up with the best of our local private chefs, restaurants, and food-to-boat meal delivery services to enjoy during your stay. Please ask.

Please note:

- Due to the off-grid nature of your break, the good news is that there is no wifi on board the boat.
- Access to the boat and down into the boat accommodation is steeper than you might be used to.

Access to and from your boat is via a floating wooden pontoon. For safety reasons, as well as the natural proximity to water, we do not encourage young children, babies or non-swimmers to stay on board. Please get in touch before booking to check if Shelduck is suitable for your group. We are always happy to help and advise.

Местоположение

Milford on Sea, England, Великобритания

Whether you're a wild-swimmer, walker, bird-watcher, or just looking to escape the rat race and chill, Shelduck's off-grid location in Keyhaven makes for the perfect destination.

Keyhaven is tucked in between Milford on Sea and Hurst Spit. Keyhaven Marshes is a haven for wildbirds, fauna and wildlife and all of which are enjoyed from a secluded and very unique vantage point, troubled by nothing but the changing tides.

A quiet coastal hamlet, Keyhaven sits on the edge of the magnificent unspoilt Hampshire coastline of the New Forest National Park known as a historic smugglers route and home to Hurst Castle, Henry VIII’s ancient artillery fortress Hurst Castle which is perched right at the end of the mile-long Hurst Spit. Climb to the top of the rampart, which boasts breath-taking 360 degree view of the Isle of Wight, Solent and Purbecks and it feels like you could actually reach out and touch the Needles lighthouse. No surprise that Enid Blyton's Famous Five adventure novel, Five go To Demon's Rocks was brought to life and filmed here in 1976 - incidentally, the same year that our very own Shelduck was built!!.

Designated an area of Special Scientific Interest, bird reserves, creeks, coastal lagoon and salt marshes surround the coast here and the famous Isle of Wight Needles and Hurst Castle, lighthouse, and fortress, dominate the landscape across the Solent. The marshes of Keyhaven Nature Reserve have an abundance of wading birds including the little Egret, turnstone, redshank, ringed plover, oystercatcher, dunlin & curlew, plus a whole variety of regularly changing visitors.

Your yacht provides a front row seat to admire this breath-taking vista; the fabulous Solent sunrise and sunsets, the night skies untroubled by light pollution, the ever constant bird activity in the reserves and sight of our resident sea life such as seals, jumping fish and dolphins.

What you do with your off-grid break is entirely up to you. Do something? Do nothing? You decide.....Perhaps spend a morning lazily fishing or dangling your legs over the side whilst reading a book; explore the marshes on a kayak, or SUP paddle board down the river; take a stroll around historic Hurst Castle or sunbathe on the remote unspoilt beach; take a refreshing wild swim in the clear coastal waters or a hike to Lymington quay for lunch and a glass of something cold. Whichever you decide, you will be more than ready to relax back onboard before sundown and enjoy your private time afloat under the stars before cosying up snug in your bunk and being drifted gently to sleep by the ebb and flow of the Solent tides.

Hello, My friend Dawn and I are the owners of 'Shelduck' and 'Turnstone', two vintage 1970's Westerly sailing boats which are moored on private pontoons in two unique New Forest coastal locations, Calshot Spit and Hurst Spit. You can enjoy all the benefits of a sleeping at sea, without actually going to sea. Our old ladies stay firmly put, bobbing around gently on their pontoon. It is the best of both worlds. The New Forest, its coastal waterways, beaches and nature reserves are truly special, rich in wildlife and activity; all of which you are able to exclusively enjoy aboard Shelduck and Turnstone. We love where we live and look forward to sharing this unique 'sleep@sea' experience with you. Hope to see you soon, Clare & Dawn

You will find your hosts out and about on the river or in the castle at most times during your stay. If you have any questions about your accommodation or the local area or would like help making any bookings or reservations before or during your stay, we are very happy to help - we know how important it is for your wine to be chilled 'just so' on a balmy summer's evening, so feel free to ask us to pop your bottles in our wine fridge in the Hurst Castle Guard Room for you!

The Milford on Sea and Keyhaven area is renowned for its vibrant and diverse restaurant scene. Make sure to ask us about eating out, and food-to-boat meal deliveries, including breakfast and afternoon tea deliveries as well as a wide range of other gastro treats. These services are very popular so booking in advance with us is advised.

If you plan to bring your own kayaks, canoes or paddleboards, please let us know before you arrive. We will arrange to meet you upon arrival and drop your luggage at your boat whilst you take a leisurely paddle down to her.

When planning your trip it is worth giving some thought to who will sleep where, as on this occasion, size does matter!

There are two single sleeping quarters onboard Turnstone, and a small double - all smaller than the average bed at home, plus a sofa that sleeps one more!

- The main fore cabin sleeps two and is a small double that tapers to a V at the bottom. The dimensions are: 180cm long, 185 wide (at its widest) tapering to 30cm at the feet.

- The two quarters cabins each measure 155cm long and are between 77-60cm in width.

- The sofa is 160cm long and 57cm wide.
