This is a rustic, 1-room house, off-the-grid in the high desert. The views are awesome & the solitude is rare. There is, however, a fine white dust almost always covering surfaces inside, no matter when cleaned. Beware anyone with bad allergies.
In this day & age, it is rare to find complete solitude, but here it is. White sugar sand dunes behind the house offer a stunning view, especially at the sunset "magic hour." The view from the cabin is good too, with windows on all 4 sides.
Important for anyone who books, please go by my written directions, NOT those from (SENSITIVE CONTENTS HIDDEN) Maps as they take you down a very bad road.
It is definitely rustic & more like a comfortable camping set-up than a B&B. Bring your own water, sleeping bags, towels, toilet paper, dish & bathing soap, etc. However bed linens & 2 pillows are provided. There is a queen-sized futon & roll-out sleeper sofa. A composting toilet works great. The kitchen is set up & plumbed for washing & there is a bath tub & sunshower, but bring your own water for drinking & bathing. A propane cooktop is excellent for coffee & cooking needs. A solar oven is functional & available.
The property is 80 acres of high desert, all open for exploration. There is a good quality movable propane heater for chilly nights. As this is without electricity, I will try to keep candles (in tall glass cylinders) stocked there, but also bring a few of your own as well as a good flashlight. Needless to say, the stars are unbelievably bright!
I do not live in Dell City but have someone to check on & take care of things. This place is for someone who wants little interaction, a rustic setting & lots of quiet, open space.
The town of Dell City is approximately 5 miles east. Groceries, a hardware store, post office, a good Mexican restaurant & a few bars are options. Guadalupe Mountain National Park is about 45 minutes to the east. It is less than 8 miles down Williams Rd. to the beautiful & austere Salt Basin Dunes, another part of the park on the west side of the mountain.
You definitely need a car, preferably a 4-wheel drive vehicle but other cars can make it with the "long way" directions posted upon booking.
This 1-room cabin has a bathroom area with a screen to fit for somewhat privacy. The composting toilet is comfortable & works great. Its ventilation seems to carry most odor up & out. There is a bathtub & sunshower for rinsing & hair-washing with your own water. The cabin is so isolated, that there is enough privacy to rig the sun-shower outside in good weather.
The kitchen sink is plumbed for drainage to wash dishes. The 2-burner propane cooktop is excellent. There are propane tanks there for use. There is also a propane exchange in town.
There is a propane-powered space heater that is super effective & can be moved around to suit your needs. Please be very gentle using the pilot knob, as it is fragile!
A beautiful fire ring is built several hundred yards in front of the cabin. Bring your own wood for a small, responsible campfire. There is a "Tuscan grill" in the house that can stand in the fire ring for cooking. There is also a solar oven that can easily be set up outside---great for baked potatoes, beans, etc. Please leave these clean & stored inside the house.
There is no telephone service although you may get cell signal depending on your provider. There is definitely cell service in town.

I live in the hill country now, so our contact will be online or texting & using the honor system. I also have a contact in Dell City to help in a pinch.

This is a humble little cabin out in the middle of nowhere but it has been my home for a long time. Please enjoy the magic of the place and please leave it as you found it & pack out whatever you bring in. Please do not smoke inside the house.
Please leave kitchen items & sink area clean. Coffee left in a mug in the desert turns into hard mud quickly :(
Regarding the composting toilet, please put soiled "brown" paper in toilet & "yellow" paper in trash bag. Please kindly carry out all trash & leave in dumpsters along the road in town.
This has come to be a little jewel at an affordable price for adventurous travelers. I would be extremely grateful for each guest to leave it as you would like to find it upon arrival. Thanks so much. Traveler's joy!

I am an herbalist, naturalist & photographer. I love being in the country near wildlife & stewarding beautiful properties. I've lived in the Texas hill country for 8 years & the wildlife continues to fascinate me. Ravens nest in the cliff wall of the canyon & often fly overhead, croaking their harsh call. My cabins are a prefect artist's or writer's retreat. The deck is surrounded by Little Blue Stem, a native tall prairie grass.
I've always enjoyed places off the beaten path, connected to nature. While completing a graduate degree in Environmental Studies, I traveled & worked in Africa back in the 90's, studying hippo communication. It was a dream come true to be immersed in Africa like that. Now, 20 years later, this place in the hill country is the closest I've come to being as close to nature as I was in Africa. No, there are no hippos or crocodiles, but there are white-tailed deer, fox, rabbit, coyote, armadillo & sometimes a gazelle can be seen.
I teach herb classes & I love getting others excited about the healing properties found in common plants. I enjoy giving plant walks on the property. I offer yoga classes & herbal consults & energy-based body work. It's important that my guests feel safe, comfortable & relaxed. The kitchen will be stocked with some basic food items. I'm also happy to offer an optional food basket upon request.
