Правила дома

Everyone who stays with us treats the house as if it were there own. When we put down drinks on furniture, we put them on coasters (as one dumb example). We ask that kids not be left unattended in the master bedroom/library as there are antique books there that are very tempting to explore. Above all, this is a family house. Anyone who comes can sense the love of my parents and our larger family. It's a place to get together with your friends and family and carry on this tradition. We've had a few bad apples over the past year, so we are extra careful these days who we rent to. Like all AirBNB hosts, we look for guests who have great reviews from other hosts - just as guests look for great reviews from other guests.

The house is very comfortable for a family vacation. The kitchen has everything needed, and there is plenty of space inside and out for games and lots of quiet reading. Very close to beautiful Lake Willoughby. Ted is a responsive and welcoming host.

Loved the large open downstairs area for dining, living and with large kitchen. Three of the upstairs bedrooms have huge windows so that it feels like being in the middle of nature since the house is surrounded by meadow and woods. We spotted deer every day. The only drawback is that the rooms cannot be darkened at all so it's difficult in the summer months in particular when traveling with an infant. We also loved the large porch where we had breakfast every morning. We spent a long weekend comfortably with 8 adults and two infants thanks to two bathrooms and lots of space in general. The kitchen is well equipped and great for cooking your own meals even with that many people. Overall we had a great time at Ted's place!

Ted was very communicative, getting us in touch with the property manager Carol, who was also great! He gave us a list of things to do and good suggestions and was straightforward about expectations. I appreciated the detailed listing, including discussion of the house and the area and the fact that it is rural and the house is continually undergoing upgrades. It was a great house, very comfortable, indeed a bit on the old side but this added to the rustic charm. The listing didn't advertise internet, but there was wifi, though it cut out for about 24 hours, probably due to network coverage in the area. Verizon has NO cell service at the house. The master bedroom was gorgeous, a bookwork's dream! In short, it was a great stay, and I would highly recommend.

Thanks, Laura, I'm glad you had a good time. I'm not sure why the wifi would kick out. The company that provides the wifi (VTEL) has good customer service and an online customer portal so if there is ever an issue in the future I can contact them and see what's up. You are welcome to come back any time! Cheers, Ted

Ted and his wife were very accommodating and welcoming in sharing their home with us for our wedding preparation weekend. The home has a lot of interesting history and is nessled back amongst a wooded area directly across the street from Lake Willoughby. The combonation of the privacy and proximity to the lake was truly unique. The large lawn area is fantastic for an outdoor gathering and the house itself can accomodate 9 adults comfortably making it a neat location for a family re-union or getaway. Lake Willoughby is truly stunning and we're so happy we came!

My large family (of about 30) flew in from all parts of the country to memorialize and remember my late aunt who shared with us the wonders of Lake Willoughby summers when we were kids. Those of us who stayed at Willoughby Lodge thoroughly enjoyed the charm of the house, the extensive book collection, and the large expansive view that the house windows accentuated. Plus, we truly enjoyed all the amenities that this house had to offer! It was great during the 4th of July weekend to use the campfire in front and make smores with my cousins and their kids. They danced around the front yard as they played with sparklers. On top of all of that, my family is almost obsessive with cooking and sharing food, and the house's welcoming kitchen was perfect for us! One day we even had a cousin cook off...some of us baked... (the brand new stove Ted added was super appreciated, and even had a convection mode!) ...while some of us grilled fresh vegetables in the back. The kitchen was stocked with all the right kinds of tools and beautiful serving dishes. My (never-short-of-opinions) aunts/uncles loved the house, and are even talking about when the next reunion will be so we can do it all over again. Thanks so much to Ted for hosting us and letting us all relive the memories of Willoughby & Vermont in my Aunt's honor, she would have been proud!

Thanks for the nice review and constructive feedback on the dust on books. I will have our cleaning lady dust the bookcases in the future. We are continuing to make improvements to the place so it will hopefully be even nicer should your family choose to visit again. We're having the hardwood floors refinished in September so they will return to their original rich honey color. Now that the house is finally at a pretty good stage my wife and I will be ramping up our marketing of the place, with a new website coming this fall and listings on websites frequented by wedding planners and corporate retreat people. If you know of anyone who wants a place to get married next year, I'd be interested in talking with them. For wall weddings, Willoughby Farm has agreed to make the family's private beach available for September events. It's really lovely down on the water, especially during the peek foliage season. Plus we're going to make the 30 acre meadow just north of my house available for the wedding as well; it has panoramic views of the lake and surrounding mountains. Please give my regards to your family and let them know how much we appreciated their enjoyment (and care) of Willoughby Lodge! Cheers, Ted

Communication with Ted and his helper Carol was always perfect. They were very kind and helpful. The house is very large and located close to a lake and the surrounding area is beautiful. It is a quiet spot where you can relax and enjoy the landscape. I am very sorry to say that we were not so happy with the house. When we entered, it smelt bad and it would have helped to open the windows a while before. Also it was not very clean, there were lots of dead flies near the windows. Bathrooms were ok and the kitchen was well equipped. We enjoyed the cozy gas oven in the living room. It’s too bad because the house is lovely and has a lot of potential. If the owners would clean it up and air it out, it would be a great place to stay.

Martina, I appreciate your candid feedback, and apologize for what happened. There were two main issues here (which I bear responsibility for and have taken steps to correct so that no other renter has this experience). First, this part of Vermont is especially rural, with an abundance of wild animals that can sometimes pose a challenge for us homeowners. In order to prevent a critter from getting into the crawl space under the house and making it their own home, we placed some mothballs there. Animals such as ground hogs hate the smell of mothballs and this is a humane way to keep them out. Unfortunately we put in too many mothballs, and this created an odor in the house. We’ve since removed all the mothballs and are using other means to humanely deal with the wildlife (a “have a heart” trap for trapping animals outside so they can be relocated). Second, a few weeks prior to your arrival we had the exterior of the house treated by an exterminator to help get rid of flies. This spray stained our outside windows to a degree I did not anticipate. We are in the process of cleaning every window inside and out so the full, unblemished view of nature can be seen through the big windows. Also, flypaper applied to windows is an unpleasant necessity in the country, especially in Northern Vermont where there are many fields and farms. Most of the year they are not a big problem but in the fall they can be a nuisance. In the future, I will have the flypaper changed within 24 hours prior to a guests arrival. While my wife and I have had nothing but positive reviews since we started renting the house through AirBNB, one poor experience is one too many and I’m very sorry this was not up to par. I have asked the folks at AirBNB to refund three nights of your stay. I also would urge anyone renting on AirBNB to provide hosts like me with complete and honest feedback (such as yours) so that we’ll know if we made mistakes, or improvements need to be made. Sincerely, Ted

It was a pleasure to stay at this home with the charming stories, beautiful lake view, serene environment and inviting living room with expansive window to the outdoor deck. Ted and his caretaker Carol were kind and welcoming and our guests who were here in Westmore Attending our wedding were thrilled to be able to stay here and enjoy this beautiful area of Vermont. We had a couple of minor items that were not working in the house (which both Carol and Ted quickly addressed in ways that they were able). We would absolutely recommend staying here if your heart delights in personal histories and personal touches to a home you are staying in and if you enjoy pondering the beauty of nature and sipping a nice bottle of wine while snug on the couch or curled in one of the Master bedroom chairs- reading a carefully chosen book. This area of Vermont is stunning and you can experience this right from the living room in this warm and inviting home. Thank you to Ted and Carol for making this home available and to Ted for continuing his father and mother's legacies.

My wife and I are empty nesters and (gasp) grandparents as of September 2014. While we live just outside Boston, we have deep Vermont roots, so we're up at our house at Lake Willoughby as often as we can be, which is not too often given that our daughter and grandson are in New York. We love hiking, snow shoeing, skiing, mountain biking, swimming in Lake Willoughby, and just about anything else you can do outdoors in this corner of Vermont they call the Northeast Kingdom. We also like to kick back with a good book, or bomb around the countryside eating at funky old diners and shopping for antiques. We also enjoy travel to other countries like England and Italy. Our hope for this house is that it will be enjoyed by families and their close friends, and treated with the kind of respect they would have for their own home.
