Ashleigh (or The Boutique Collection) was really warm and helpful during the booking stage of our stay. She answered questions and was happy to take a call from a frazzled traveler!
Upon arrival we had to wait a while as the two property managers were very busy and a little chaotic on the day. Here's the thing - Ashleigh is not a private property owner. This is one of scores of properties being managed by The Boutique Collection up and down the FNQ coast. And they actually complained about being busy. Which probably explains why when we had a problem with the refrigerator and they promised to get back to us that they failed to do so. A simple return phone call would have sufficed but we never heard back from them.
The apartment we got was actually really nice. The furniture may have been a bit dated, the kitchen equipment limited, and the mattresses ancient (we could hear the springs squealing beneath us) but overall we enjoyed the apartment we were in once we made a couple of small adjustments.
We'd recommend that if you book with 'Ashleigh' you ask them to specify which apartment you are in (as some have different bed configurations) and also request some pictures. The pictures listed are indicative only and our apartment looked vastly different to the one on AirBnB. It wasn't a terrible difference, but it wasn't 100% honest either. We were OK with it but if you really want the pictured place you should check with the Boutique Collection first.
Palm Cove itself is charming. With a gorgeous esplanade, swaying palms and friendly locals it's easy to find romance and relaxation along the beach. The restaurants are almost all great, although more pricey than those found in Port Douglas or Cairns (some are very much worth it!). Don't shop for essentials in the village - go to a local shopping centre as the price difference is vast. We'll definitely be back in town soon though. It was so good we didn't even do the tourist stuff - we hung out in town and simply enjoyed the break and the beach.
Amphora as a resort is a little older but in good condition. It's probably more suited to young families and older couples than to adults looking to escape without the kids but that has its charms too. It's located on a quieter end of the esplanade which is nice and the restaurant attached makes brilliant coffee.
