Impressed by its convenient location and charming courtyard garden. The bed was firm, linen and towels were clean and the breakfast food left for us was plentiful and fresh.
No kettle, no toaster, loo seat not secure. Flat not secure (owner left door open, keys in door) - we entered and left without being noticed -so could an opportunist thief.
The flat smelled of dogs, including the guest room. we were warned that we needed to be tolerant of dogs. It seems that as well as owning a dog and walking dogs for others Melanie "minds" dogs for others in the flat.
Shown the kitchen and kindly offered tea on arrival. Melanie explained that she had no kettle - she had one but it "blew up" and she now boiled water in a small saucepan (repeatedly used and encrusted with lime-scale). She expected us to do the same as she was not around at breakfast times. No toaster either - we could only make toast in a frying pan!
Kitchen furniture was an eclectic mix of styles, some antique. The chairs at the small round breakfast table were cast-iron garden chairs, one provided with a cushion.
Room in the process of refurbishment - areas of bare plaster and discoloured patches on the chimney breast - no signs that redecoration was being considered. Impression; a relaxed attitude to hygiene. It was difficult to see whether surfaces were clean and my suspicion is that they were not.
Bathroom; an electric shower over a bath, the power switched on by a pull-cord. Water from the shower was hot enough but the shower head did not disperse the flow very well. Hot water to the vintage wash basin was inconsistent - could not rely on hot or even warm water for washing hands and face. Like the kitchen, in need of redecoration as the cracked paint, discoloured grouting of tiles and build up of lime-scale around taps gave an impression, perhaps the reality, of being dirty.
Melanie apologised for the fact that the loo seat was not secure - she said she could not fix it herself and had not got around to getting someone else to do it. We just had to put up with it.
The Airbnb web page suggests that there is a TV available but the only TV seemed to be in a living room and it was made clear that this was not for our use. Misled by the "2 beds" note on the web page - our room had only a double bed we'd have preferred twin beds.
Overall feeling - disappointment, and at times of shock at the lack of care given to this let. I'm equally surprised at the complimentary reviews previously given. I could understand this if the faults I noticed had only developed recently but they appear to be long-term and systemic.
Though I have had two really great Airbnb experiences my stay at Melanie's will make me much more circumspect in future.
