The Retreat
is the smallest room in the house ("A broad-minded person finds even a small space accommodating." -Chinese Proverb) and has the best view. Bathroom (not en suite) is semi-private, with a shower and big claw-foot tub.

Oceanfront, down by the dock, private beach. House loaded with art and antiques; library.
Full Breakfast included in price. We serve what I have humorously taken to calling an Off-the-Continental Breakfast (Haida Gwaii is about 100 km off the coast of Canada, as Islanders like to say when they refer to mainland British Columbia) which includes many kinds of coffee, every kind of tea, orange juice laced with elderflower cordial, stewed fruits (prunes, figs, apricots and rhubarb, though rhubarb is technically a vegetable), local wild berries when in season, homemade granola and yoghurt, Susan’s 36-Hour Sourdough Bread and a variety of jams and marmalade.
One thing we can guarantee about a stay at Copper Beach Guest House as described by Margaret Atwood on (SENSITIVE CONTENTS HIDDEN) as unique, luverly is that it is an experience.

The place is certainly different from a regular b&b. It is filled with hystory, interesting objects, books and it is a good meeting point for interesting people. I can't speak of the other rooms, but our 'retreat' room was definitely small, with a short bed where one had to jump across the partner to get in. The bathroom described on the site as 'shared/semi-private', described to us in an e-mail as 'private but not en-suite' was also accessible to any guest through the living room and with door directly from the kitchen. It is also very dark and in need of updating (especially the old tub).

Copper Beach House is a very sociable place. We found ourselves in many interesting conversations with other guests and local people alike. Masset is a hugely hospitable place. You need a bike or car to get to some of the great trails and beaches. We followed some of the recommendations to be found in Susan's book, A Taste of Haida Gwaii, to our delight!

The Retreat has a very comfy bed and provided all that I needed for my short stay in Masset. The complimentary chocolates and ear plugs in my room were very thoughtful. It's a short walk into town and the best part is the variety of delicious food for breakfast with homemade baked goodness. I look forward to returning here the next time I'm in Masset!

Susan was very responsive and friendly in our correspondence leading up to my visit to Masset. On arrival Jennifer made me feel very welcome and even though she had only recently taken on the day to day operation of CBH my stay was fantastic. I enjoyed a wonderful breakfast and chatted with two other guests from Smithers before heading to the seaplane terminal. I have no reservations highly recommending CBH to my friends and other airbnb users.

I am a Canadian poet, novelist, journalist, lecturer (UBC; Optional Residency in Creative Writing MFA Programme); mother, grandmother of twins, wife of Stephen Reid (drum-maker and author of Jackrabbit Parole and A Crowbar in the Buddhist Garden). I love cooking for guests and making them feel at home at Copper Beech House. We have the most interesting guests in the world come our way (I think!) and what I hear most often, after a visit to Haida Gwaii, is, “This experience changed my life!” We want your stay to be an event in your life, more than just a comfy bed and fresh sourdough bread in the morning. Expect the unexpected, relax into daydreamy Island time, and your visit here will be...utterly memorable.
